I just picked up a Savage m10 Stealth in 6.5 CR to get in to long range fun. Now I need a scope. Since I blew most of my cash on the rifle, I'm looking for a decent yet inexpensive FFP scope. I found Athlon Optics, read many reviews (mostly positive), and wanted to get some input from the knowledgeable. Also thinking of Burris XTR rings to mount on the stock picatinny rail. Anyone have any experience with this optic?

Thanks,

I have no experience with them and if you don't get any feedback hear I have seen several posts on sniper hide forum about the brand. I have read mostly good about them on various forums

A couple months back I emailed Athlon with a few questions. They got back to me in a timely manner and seemed like they cared about their product. What I learned from the email was that...

1. Everything they sell, short of the Cronus line, comes from China.
2. They weren't willing to say if specific illuminated optics were daylight bright or not.
3. They weren't willing to say if any of their 1x optics were really 1x.

So yeah, not a ton they were willing to put on the record with me. Now, that's not to say I am down on them, and am actually considering their 4-14x44mm Talos. I'd like to try a Horus style reticle without breaking the bank, and the used market is too proud of their Primary Arms R-grid scopes to come down in price a bit. The place I have seen Athlon discussed the most is OpticsTalk, which is hosted by SWFA. Now, SFWA doesn't stock Athlon, so consider it a tough crowd there. http://www.opticstalk.com/athlon-rifle-scopes_topic42523.html

The number one complaint I have heard about Athlon is that their turrets are mushy, and after a bit of dialing, they no longer stop on the hash marks. But, the people who have complained to the company have been taken care of. For people who say something along the lines of "the glass it better than it's price point", well... I have heard and read that a lot. So much in fact, that I take it with a grain of salt. Unless people are saying the glass is bad for the price point, I tend not to let that be a major factor in my purchasing decisions. Also, it is worthwhile to think about at what price point is a scope made in China just no longer an attractive option. $300? $500? $700?

Things to think about.

Thanks gentlemen. And thanks for the site references. Lots of good info there! Since I am very new to long range target shooting, the mushy turrets may not be much of a bother at first. As I get more practice (and save up some $$) I can move to a better quality scope.

IMG_1328.JPG I have that exact scope on a savage 6.5 creedmoor I can tell you this my turrets are not mushy and for the cost I doubt you could beat its features with that scope and my savage I shot this 5 shot group at 100 yards all I can say is I love mine! Plus the lifetime warranty is nice in case something does go wrong.

Got a chance to review it. At the time i thought SWFA was the only good budget optic but it when i got around to giving it ago it was a decent optic will pretty good magnification. Dont get me wrong, it aint no schmidt and bender, and personally i think the swfa 3-15 has better light transmission through the glass is a little better, but the athlon tracks very well. With 18 mils of adjustment, with the right base you should have some good ups to get out there. The first focal place is a plus in my book as well. Good for the money. I heard Athlon has a decent warranty as well?

I dont know about anyone else, but the APMR reticle is pretty good. If you think the horus reticle is busy, then you will think this one is too.
I like it it.

A friend is a dealer and likes these scopes, I have not used one. He also likes Vortex (is not a dealer in those). I want to see these, I've always used Leupold but even with their quality I'm balking at spending too big (I know, you get what you pay for in optics but I'm not is any serious competitions and Nightforce etc is just not in the cards right now). I have a 10 BA Stealth coming.

I cannot speak to the scope but I can remember when the Burris rings you mentioned were $39.99 and not scratching a c-note. If you've got that sort of change for rings, I'd recommend TPS. Available in aluminum or steel, Weaver or 1913 picatinney, amazing tolerances and finish.

A pair of TPS TSR steel rings on my Marlin 25N.

I will be getting the athlon argos BTR in 8-34x56 in a few weeks. Will let you know how it works out. appears to be a good value for the money, and good warranty.

Camera Land New York is a great Vendor to do business with and they are running a Shot Show special on the Argos with the following pricing:
Argos 2-10x40 reduced from $249.99 to only $199.99
Argos 3-15x40 reduced from $279.99 to only $219.99
Argos 4-20x50 reduced from $319.99 to only $249.99
Argos 6-30x56 reduced from $349.99 to only $269.99

I haven't seen them cheaper than that, so might be worth checking out. If you want another model just call and they will usually work with you on pricing. http://cameralandny.com/

something is up with those from cameraland, they have an MOA and a BDC reticle? I have not ever seen those before, I am looking for the one with the mildot and windage reticle.

The owner of Camera Land posts on some other gun forums. While I have no personal experience, he has talked very highly of them in the past. If I were looking for something in that price range I'd consider one. Call Camera Land and ask their opinion.

No experience with the optics in question, but my thoughts on the subject tend to be "buy once, cry once." If your reasoning includes the line, "if i dont like it, I'll just upgrade later," then i would just save for your backup plan.

Now, i am an unapologetic Vortex fanboy. In my house, there are 5 of their riflescopes, 2 pairs of binoculars, and a rangfinder. I have never had to take advantage of their warranty, but i have friends who have: a broken reticle on a Crossfire and a Ranger 1000 that wouldnt read past 700yds even with new batteries on a reflective surface. Both were replaced, free of charge, no questions asked.

Scott at Liberty Optics used to give a discount to THR members. I got 2 of my Viper PST's from him a few years back. Not sure if he still does, but might be worth an ask.

Yeah, they're a fair bit more pricey, but like i said, i figure better to pay more once than pay more later AFTER you paid less.

I'll shut up now.

We shall see, I just placed a phone order with Doug for the scope I was looking for. Not quite as nice a deal as $299 but it was less than anywhere else is selling it for.

I have a 3-15x40 on order, so perhaps we can get some reviews done on them.
If i can bully my buddys into helping we can get a redfield revolution, vx-1, vx3, and vx-r, and my Nikons on the range at the same time.
One dosent like my nikons and i dont like his leupolds, and our other buddy cant tell a difference, so it should be interesting.

Mine came in yesterday. Today I got it mounted on my AR 15, and moved the old bushnell banner to my hi point 45 carbine. Won't be able to get any range time in for a few weeks at least.|

Made it out to the range today, this was at 100 yards. I would say I am extremely pleased with it. This is on a Palmetto State Armory ar15 with stainless barrel, standard bolt carrier group, POF 3.5 straight trigger, and Athlon Argos BTR scope. Ammunition was my reloads using 26.5 grains CFE 223 powder, 64 grain FMJBT in lake city brass. I am very happy with the results

I did the math on my load, and calculated the ballistics and converted the data to range and clicks of elevation, for a little label to put in the flip up scope cap :)
