ATI stocks are OK, but IMHO the ProMag Archangel is WAY better. A friend of mine has the ProMag stock on his mini, and it's very good. The top portion is aluminum, so it provides an excellent platform for mounting optics. The only downside is the stock does not fold.
Archangel with Mini-14 tactical on top, ATI stock on bottom.
I have one and I think it is a pretty decent stock except I didn't much care for the hand guard and top rail so I replaced it with an Ultimak rail and it's a huge improvement. I have a small red dot, a TRS-25 that now sits low enough to co-witness w/ the iron sights, for the most part, and is very solid. With the other set up the sight sits up quite a bit higher making the iron sights useless. Also when you clean it or if you want to change the stock then you don't have to take the rail or sight off to do it which is also helpful.
The other thing I didn't like with mine was it came with a very short, plastic lower rail that sucked but I have since replaced it with the 6" aluminum rail, I would highly recommend that over the stubby rail it came with if you want to use any kind of forward grip on it.
Maybe its just me, but the "handiness" of the Stock Mini-14 is most of its charm. If you need an optic you can get the Ruger rings, a 3rd-party side mount, or the aforementioned Ultimak rail.
As a general rule you want the optic mounted to the receiver or barrel. Mounting it to the stock means how well it holds zero will depend on how tight and repeatable the the stock fits the rifle.
I'm with Wally. I have used the ATI on a 10-22 and I do not like it nearly as well as the standard stock. Now, an Ultimak rail and scout scope on a Mini sounds good to me. A 1-4 mounted in the standard location sounds good as well.
I agree a plain stock has its charm on a mini, that's one thing I like about the Ultimak is that you can leave it and the optic in place and use it with different stocks. I usually prefer the ATI stock but sometimes I like the look and feel of the plain stock as well, depending on my mood I guess. That said later on I may look into a thumb hole stock for it and give that a shot.
I've owned minis for years, currently own 3 and I keep the standard stocks on them. for me their appeal is the classic Garand look and action. if I wanted something different I would buy it that way, just cant seem to wanna mess with a classic looking rifle.
