I have seen videos online of ruger 10/22s with the Atkins Accelerator installed. I know that the ATF has reclassified these and they are no longer sold to general public. Were these worth the money when they were sold? They looked cool, but also looked like they were full auto only, no single shot. I'm not sure how they functioned, as far as selectable fire rates go, just curious as to if they were worth it.

http://www.firefaster.com/ has a bit of info on the akins accelerator and the back and forth with the ATF.

It's my understanding that it fires single shot unless you hold your finger in the right position so it can "recoil back" to your finger and in turn fire again.

Thats exactly right.
Its a modification of the stock to allow the reciever to move back and forth slightly, basically you hold your finger in one place and one place only in the trigger guard and it bump fires until you are out of rounds.
Technically the gun is still semi automatic, however the ATF see's otherwise.

not again!

For most people, the AA was a hard, $1000.00 lesson to learn due to the reclassification.
The mainspring of the device had to be forfeited to the ATF, ostensibly to avoid prosecution for posessing an unregistered and post-86 full-auto; though no specific promises of immunity have been made.

Former woners now have a nice jumble of parts that USED to be the Akins Accelerator.

I wonder what size, length, compression ratio, etc and other specs the mainspring was- just so as to make sure NOT to own one, of course.

I hear they were pretty fun, though I have never personally fired one.

FYI.

The problem wasn't so much that the BATFE declared the atkins accelerator an MG, it was that they did so after first declaring that it wasn't. What good is a letter from the BATFE getting assurance that your product is legal if they can capriciously rescind that decision with no recourse or reason several months later?

There are several phrases to effectively convey the propriety of this kind of behavior that immediately come to mind, and I'm pretty sure I can't use any of them here. So just imagine I applied an epithet to the BATFE that would wilt flowers and we're good.

From what few comments I heard, they were much better made than typical hellfire trigger packs and whatnot; an expensive, but pretty nice toy.

From what I remember of shooting it (just one magazine, unfortunately), it fired pretty fast, and was moderately accurate (for a weird form of total-gun short-recoil action). I don't remember what the fire rate was precisely, but I recall it being fairly fast..a 25 round magazine didn't last but for a second or so. I suppose with skill it might have been possible to learn how to get singles or doubles, but I didn't have enough time to mess with it.

It fit outside the ATF's own definition of a MG...so they just changed the definition. They essentially said bumpfiring (and thus semi-automatic rifles) are illegal. Second Amendment? Never heard of it.

I don't know if it was worth $1000 but I considered getting one. Glad I didn't! It was about 1/10th the price of a full auto 10/22 trigger pack (if you can even find one for sale).
