Atlanta area gun shops and ranges?

I am moving to Atlanta in 4 months and am seeking advice on gun shops and ranges down there.

Would prefer 2-3 shops with a wide variety--I do casual .22 target, upland hunting, self defense handgun and rifle.

I like indoor ranges with .25 feet that allow rapid fire. Outdoor up to 200 is fine.
 
I hope folks aren't getting tired of me pointing people to shops on my site.

There's three that I have around the Atlanta area, which you can view here.
 
In Lawrenceville area: Bullseye. Very good selection. Good prices. Dirty to OK range.

In Norcross area: Classic Marksman. OK selection. Slightly high prices. Good range.

In Smyrna area: Adventure Outdoors. Very good selection. Very good prices but no range.

In Smyrna area: Hot Shots. OK selection but higher prices than Adv Out. But VERY good range. Very clean and well maintained.

Are the shooting venues from the Atlanta olympics still running?

All I know about is the shotgun event Olympic site. From my understanding it has been closed down and turned into some type of law enforcement training facility.

Reason - Not enough local support to make a go of it as a Public Range facility.

Ed's is like an odd carnival of the macabre. Definitely strike up a conversation with the older guy, who has the uncanny talent of turning ANY conversation into a rant about the Greatness and Infallibility of Gaston Glock. This man once told me that "Sigs are topheavy and not too accurate, and I've never seen one that didn't have feeding problems. Get a Glock." Yep.

Even more fun is looking at the prices. All used guns, many with burned powder still in the chamber. Rattly Russian Makarov with 50% rust? $500! It's a collector's item!

Then enter the Dark and Forbidden Range of Shootin'. Witness every imaginable example of unsafe and unsupervised gun handling! Cry in agony as you can't find a single target hanger that hasn't had at least one of the cables shot off that day! Feel the thousands of .22 shells get caught in your shoes because He Who Shall Clean the Range disappeared many years ago!

Yes indeed. I sometimes shoot there because it's close to work, but if I've got the time, I make the drive to Hot Shots. Much more professional, clean, nice, well-ventilated. Prices aren't the best, but they're pretty competitive, and there's Adventure Outdoors right down the street.
 
I went to Pannell's a few years ago when I lived up that way. I don't know if it's the same now, but the lanes seems claustrophobically narrow.... :-(

On the southern side... I75 by the Farmer's Market @ 285 - GA Range & Gun. Nice lanes.

A little further South - Tactical Gear Supply (cop shop) and Forrest Park Army Navy.

I don't know of any indoor ranges that officially let you rapid fire. Most of them are too tired of having idjuts blowing out target holders & ceiling panels.

There are three outdoor State ranges around Atlanta. One up I75 near Resaca called John's Mountain, one up past Gainesville called Wilson Shoals, and one out I20E called Charly Elliot.
 
IN case you are interested in sporting clays, check out Cherokee Rose Sporting Clays down in Griffin - about 20-25 minutes south of downtown Atlanta off I-75.

My favorite gunshops in the Atlanta area are "Hit and Run Guns" in Norcross and "Adventure Outdoors" in Smyrna. Hit and Run has the best selection of Taurus and CZ's in the area. Adventure outdoors has more guns in stock than any dealer in the Southeast.
I've had great experiences buying guns at both places.
Also, my local gunshop, Gable's in Douglasville, is also a good place.

Hahaha!!! Ed's Gun & Tackle. They're the biggest joke around when it comes to gun shops. I don't even consider them, when I think of gun shops around Atlanta. I don't really consider them as a gun shop, considering their prices and the guys that work there. Tex, you're right about the older guy. What a piece of work! He's the surest way of getting WRONG information about just about anything. By the way, they don't even carry new guns - only consignments and a few used.
 
My Ed's Guns experience

I have been to Ed's Guns 3 or 4 times now. The old guy I think you are talking about is really tall, kind of soft-faced, wears thick glasses and keeps clean shaven,
MAKE NO MISTAKE --
This man is a cheater and a thief! I purchased a .22/24gau combination rifle from this shop once and had to return it. There is a restocking fee, which is understandable... But he couldn't take my card and refund my money electronically. Instead he gave me back the cash, didn't count it out to me and handed it to me folded up after giving me a whole lot of **** about returning a $350 gun "so fine as that one." When I walked out of the store, I counted the wad of cash and it was $50 short. I walked back in - at this point I was pissed off, and walked up to him, still closing the register and slammed down on the counter so hard I almost broke the glass, demanding he give me $50 he owes me. He's a nervous, insecure man- I was 19 when I did that and he couldn't hold back the shivers I gave him from my gesture. He gave be back $60 for being an ***** I guess. Or maybe it was another mistake. Sounds like fiction but this really happened.
Anyway the shooting range is customer-maintained. Also the gun I bought was brand-new, but they sold it to me in an old rotten sock of a gun bag from the civil war or something. When I was there the other day the guy reckognized me and tried his best to look busy. I don't blame him.
The employees there all carry handguns on their hips to intimidate all the hicks that go there to f around. Just to clear this up, the shells are supposed to be swept by customers... I rented the dirtiest .45 to shoot there and the whole price (lane time, weapon rental, and 1 box of .45 ammo) was $37.67. I guess that's reasonable enough. Safety and supervision-wise, the guy helping me asked if I needed help operating the handgun, and I said I could figure it out, just bc i told him it was my first time shooting a .45. He said I could ask for help and to have fun... I think the one ****** there is just the big older guy with glasses. BTW I talked to him and he IS the owner.
 
Where will you be? "Atlanta area" is really, really big.

To jump on this bandwagon, I want an outdoor range somewhere between exits 8 and 15 up GA 400. Anyone know of one? There's an indoor range (Bullseye) just off exit 13, but I'm looking for >100yds.
 
hopefully after 3 years, the original poster has found a range or two in the Atlanta area :p

But since it's been bumped up...if anyone's up near Gainesville/Oakwood, check out the Oakwood Sportsman Lodge. My buddies and I shoot indoor there, they allow up to .50cal (no black powder) the staff are nice,(no bs) the place is clean, and usually not too many people there. Best thing is they don't charge by the hour - 10 bucks lets you shoot all day. You can rent guns for $5 and exchange it for another for the same $5.
 
I didn't see anyone mention David's Gun Room on Buford Highway in Norcross. It isn't as large as some of the others but they are really helpful.

As for ranges, I go to American Classic most of the time. I went to Charlie Elliott WMA for the 1st time last weekend and thought it was a nice range. Creekside Range is up 75N and seems nice. Again, it depends what part of town you're at.

Feel free to check out GA packing. It's got a forum with range and show reviews etc.
 
Ed's Guns is now Nick's Guns. I have been shooting there for about a year, it's definitely not the dirtiest place around.

Correct. They've changed ownership, and the obnoxious old-timers have sought employment elsewhere. Prices are competitive, and the range is vastly improved.

They might be carrying guns for protection. I dunno...lots of folks do that, not just at gun stores.

And every range I've ever shot at expects shooters to police their brass. It's courteous of us as shooters to do so.

The range at Nick's has improved but it could use an improvement in ventilation although that may be cost prohibitive. They are well informed and conpetitively priced though.
 
I purchased my 586 from Adventures Outdoors, which has a fantastic selection and a helpful staff. I recently purchased my Kimber Tactical Custom II from Nick's (formerly Ed's) at a very competitive rate. The ranges I've used, best to worst, are:

Bullseye
Hot Shots
Nick's
Panell's

Air circulation is a big deal to me and accounts for most of the ranking. Customer service is also important, then lighting, then price. I don't mind sweeping my own brass.
 
There's also Main Street Guns in Lilburn. Open Mon-Thurs. Stopped in last week. I didn't see any ammo. They seem to specialize in new firearms. They were very busy, only two employees there when I went. They are at gun shows on the week-ends. Prices on the revolvers I was interested in seemed the same as Tucker Guns, David's on Buford Hwy, and American Classic Marksman.

The young man who helped me was friendly, and safety conscious.

Because you asked, I will offer you my (along with EVERY ONE OF MY CO-WORKER'S inputs)

Do not go to Ed's guns and American Classic Marksman. EVERYTHING about Ed's guns is horrible. American Classic Marksman is WAY TOO overpriced and the employees there seem a bit sluggish/slothy and they are quite rude to people they don't know personally. The only reason I would ever go to American Classic Marksman is to buy cleaning supplies if Wal Mart is out. I would never go back to Ed's Guns, period.
