Police: Lowhill man chases 'exterminators' with knife, gun
9:42 AM EDT, July 29, 2008
A 78-year-old man used a kitchen knife and a shotgun to chase three men posing as exterminators from his Lowhill Township home, according to police.

State police at Fogelsville issued a news release urging anyone with information to contact their station at 610-395-1438.

The incident happened between 6 and 7 p.m. Friday at a home on Route 100.

State police gave the following account in a news release:

A man who was 40 to 50 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 190 pounds with a heavy build and brown hair parted on the side entered the home through an unlocked front door. Upon entering, he advised the 78-year-old male resident he would do a free home extermination.

During the conversation, the homeowner noticed two other men rummaging through his residence. Both were between 25 and 27 years old, about 6 feet tall, 180 pounds and had thin builds and dirty blond hair parted on the side.

When the homeowner ordered them to leave his house, a fight broke out. While the homeowner struggled with one of the younger males, the older male restrained the homeowner. But the homeowner broke free, grabbed a kitchen knife and ordered all three men out of his house.

The older male tried to regain entry. But by then, the homeowner had a shotgun in hand.

The three men fled in a green van south on Route 100. They managed to steal about $10 in coins.

KILTED CLAYMORE - "whats with people picking on the old folks?!"

Simple enough. Outlaws are despicable cowards and they have the idea that old people usually can't protect themselves, therefore are easy targets for their predation.

Some old people fool the outlaws, fortunately.

I'm just glad the old man made it out of that situation ok. Hope he'll be locking his doors now.

I love stories about old folks besting twerps.

I hope that if it happens again, someone shoot the scum bags first before they can escape to rob again. What nerve, to try and rob an old man. I hope they get what is coming to them.:fire:

I think for certain people the term "Old Timer" should just be replaced by "Survivor"

This is a great example.... I hope I am the same way when I reach his age :D

whats with people picking on the old folks?!

They're easy targets and usually have some good things to steal.

I was talking to an older man when I worked as a cashier, and he told me that earlier that week, some people tried entering his home posing at inspectors from the water company. He didn't let them in. He then called the water company and they told him that they weren't doing inspections. God knows what could have happened if he had let them in.

I don't mean to tell you I'm an old guy, but I knew king size when he was still a prince.

I never answer the door bell without dropping a .357 magnum in a pocket. I keep my hand on the grip and my thumb on the hammer.

Yep. It seems like every day there's a news story of an senior citizen who gets attacked by predators.

Thank god the 78 year old guy was spunky enough to get away and get to his shotgun. That shotgun may very well have saved his life.

I'd hate to see someone try that on my grandfather. Even after all these years, he is still very proficient with both his little snub nosed .38 and his old LAPD service weapon: a S&W Model 19 in .357 magnum.
The old guy outshoots me with wheelguns.

That's generally speaking why the miscreants tend to pick on women and older folks....preadators ALWAYS look for the easy target.

Does the Lion go after the Leopard? No....

Lion attacks the gazelle.

Been many years back, but my long-deceased uncle got jumped by 2 miscreants who thought he was "e-z pikins". He showed them what a 75-year-old guy with a hickory cane can do...

A common and foolish mistake that allows thousands of illegal entries to occur each year. The old man was lucky this time, maybe not so lucky next time. Hopefully he learned his lesson and will keep his doors locked from now on.

entered the home through an unlocked front door

someone stole about $500 from my wallet (which i had mistakenly left on the computer desk) because i left the side door unlocked. funny thing is, i was two rooms away watching TV. didn't hear a thing, but they most likely heard me, so that may be the reason they only took my wallet. lesson: keep doors locked!
