[A .410 beats screaming for help, but you might want something with a little more authority. Like a .30-06]

Police: Home Invasion Shootout Leaves Intruder Dead
Craig Homeowner, Gunman Exchange Gunfire

POSTED: 5:24 am MST March 27, 2006
UPDATED: 12:12 pm MST March 27, 2006
CRAIG, Colo. -- A 60-year-old Moffat County man was identified Monday as the victim of a home invasion shootout in Craig.

Police said they were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of Washington Street at about 5:40 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a home invasion.

Officers found Mario Vigil lying on a floor outside a bedroom and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The officers then found the homeowner and his 9-year-old son hiding in a bedroom.

An investigation revealed the homeowner saw Vigil trying to break into the front door with the butt end of a rifle. The homeowner grabbed a .410 shotgun and shot the intruder in the chest as he entered the home, but the shot did not stop him, police said.

The homeowner and his son ran into a back bedroom where the homeowner grabbed a 30-06 rifle and started loading it. Police said the intruder fired two rounds from a 30.30 rifle through the closed bedroom door. He then began to break down the door and was shot in the hip by the homeowner.

Police determined that Vigil was involved in a domestic violence case with the mother of the homeowner. Neither the homeowner or the mother were identified.

An initial investigation revealed the shooting was justifiable and was in self defense, police said.

^^^agreed. Cept the poor homeowner now has bulletholes in his walls and his gun is in evidence for god knows how long.

Better to lose the gun to authorities than to lose X number of years of your life (they choose) in prison to the same authorities.

Since nothing was said of what load was used in the .410 then it could have been a case of not using the right load. You can get buckshot for a .410. ;)

victim????????????

The VICTIM is the homeowner. The invader is the recipient of the victims wrath (and justly so)

OMG! That homeowner would have won that fight very easily if he had a weaponlight!

Gunbattles are won by firepower and the ability to keep cool. If you can SHOOT through a WALL or DOOR ... DO IT.

I've been preaching this sh*t for a long time. Where are the over-penetration people? Where are the tactical-ninjas with all their gadgets? Lights and gadgets don't win home defense scenarios when you are on Defense. Firepower and smarts does. I've gotten nothing but silly arguments and condescending comments from so many people. Who still thinks that a centerfire rifle is overkill for home defense? Anyone? Anyone? Who thinks that it would have been even better if the homeowner had a 30rd magazine and "swiss cheesed" that door? In a life or death gun battle, it should not be on your mind to worry about over pentration. It shouldn't be on your mind to follow some stupid TV-born rules of engagement. You must win. You must live. If you can level them with lead, do it. There's nothign wrong with tearing up the house. There's nothing wrong with tearing up the home invader. Only one thing matters, only one things counts - YOUR life and the life of your FAMILY. Everything else is aftermath BS.

If this happens in my home, I will be emptying the entire 30rd magazine at the door and reloading....

every time i hear these stories

I wince at the thought of how the guy and his son's ears must still be ringing. they really ought to make suppressors legal. my ideal HD gun would be a 9mm sig p228-type with xb200type light, ct laser grip, night sights, integrated suppressor, 13rnd magazine, no mag safety/integrated lock (not sure about loaded chamber indicator, but probably none of that either), loaded with 124gr +p efmj.

one day i'll move to a state where they'll let me pay the tax and get a supressor for my hd gun.

Colorado's "make my day" law gives the homeowner immunity from prosecution in both criminal and civil court. He should get his guns back soon.

Score one for the good guys.

You know what guys, I could care less if the cops hold my $2000 Sig 556 for years ...what counts is winning the gunbattle. Guns cost nothing compared to your life.

(actually, I'd be annoyed that they hold on to it for too long of a time, but just putting everything into perspective)

Yes, they should. It's just that lawmakers and the antis have the Hollywood idea that all suppressors only make that "thwip" sound in movies, and are only used to kill good guys silently and such.

They are legal here, and I have an ideal pistol for one, (Taurus PT92) but they're just too EXPENSIVE for a decent one...and I'm not about to try a do-it-yourself-blow-up-in-face one.

Go buy a Remington 870 jr. in .20 gauge. Take the barrel down to 18". Put a GOOD folding stock or pistol grip stock combo and you have the handiest hall cleaner in the world... Total cost would be about $300.00 or so, depending mostly on the stock.

#3 buckshot to the chest and that dude would have been D O N E. No question.....

I can agree with just about every sentiment here. However contrary to tread's opinion of weaponlights being useless, they do have their use but aren't required. You can't shoot the invaded if you can't see him. Yes a flashlight will work just fine, the weaponlight just makes it easier. Also flashlight may not be where the gun is, flashlights tend to get used alot and not put back where they should be. I personally don't have a weaponlight, and can't say I would ever carry one. However I may someday put one on my HD gun. Of course then again my HD gun is nothing more then my carry gun sitting on the table next to my head when I am sleeping.
