Attaching an optic to a standard shotgun rail?

Is there a doohickey that will attach to a standard rail and then accept say, rimfire rings for example, at that point? I'm thinking of putting an ESD on my dedicated turkey shotgun.

Let me get this straight...
You have a picatinny rail on the gun and you want to adapt to a rimfire/airgun rail?

No, a standard thin shotgun rail, about 3/8ths or 7/16" across. But lol, that would be weird....

I should say it's a "vent rib", not a rail. The rail is just on there for looks and to raise the line of sight, not for mounting things. But this is a beater NEF Excel Auto 5 camo, so if there's a way to "grab" the rail with an adapter for some kind of rings (rimfire or otherwise), where only extremely minimal accuracy at short range is needed, I'd be interested.

What about like a carry handle adapter for ar optics? Never tried before heck just thought about it reading this post.

I looked at that when Remington offered it and was not wild about the way it attached. I went with an Aimtech saddle mount and have had no problems.

Sounds like a bubba project. Which by all means bubba away i always support tinkering around with stuff. Sometimes it is better to enjoy something for what it is though. Sounds like it may just end up less accurate though.

Be advised that whatever you do, it is going to be subject to recoil on the same order of magnitude as a big game rifle. Rimfire rings might be good for two shots, but I would not bet heavily. Similarly, a vent rib is not designed to handle a load like that alone. Better get something designed to do it.

Problem is you'll be raising your line of sight a good bit no matter how you do it. That means making changes to your stock (swapping for a Monte Carlo, adding a cheek rest etc) or else dealing with a 'floating face,' which won't do much for your ability to hit anything....

Yeah, now I'm thinking this is a bad idea, espec. in light of the fact that the "irons" are fully adjustable and decent fiber optic already..... thanks all.

Umm, vent ribs are normally glued on, and aren't very strong in the first place.

The rail is just on there for looks and to raise the line of sight

Actually, its main function is heat dissipation.

Maybe some of them are glued but I thought that soft solder was the normal method for attaching the ribs on shotgun barrels.

Either way I agree with the rest and wouldn't suggest attaching anything other than a set of light iron sights to the rib. Or maybe a ghost ring on the receiver or just over the chamber area of the barrel?
