Attention Garandaholics!!!New in wrapper M1 Garands

Reading on the CMP forum it seems that they have run across a crate of 60 new in wrapper post war M1's.

They may start auctioning them off later this year and are predicting as much as $5000 as the going price. That's a pretty good chunk of change and I already have 4 M1s but a new in wrapper one would be a crown jewel of the collection. How much would all of you Garandaholics out there pony up?

I believe they have a LOT more than 60 new in the wrapper M1s and they know it.
But why release them through the luck pf the draw program when they can sell them on their auction sight at prices that have been approaching buyer stupid.
$2000.oo would be my personal limit.

I remember being in college in 1969 - 1974, and the local discount store had galvanised trash cans crammed with Garands, your choice at $20.

Some of them were quite nice. (sob...)


But I spent my student loan money on booze and wimmin. (sob... sob...)

Like i said on TFL, I had a problem ponying up the $400. MAYBE $1000, definitely not $5000.

They'll sell. Even at $5K they won't last long. I have a CMP Collector's Grade WWII SA. It's all original and all matching. I bought it for $750 and I was offered $2K for it. I turned it down as I know I wouldn't have the money to replace it ever again.

To me, they wouldn't be worth much more than a couple hundred dollars over the cost of a service grade.
I actually like the ones that are well used. I have a couple service grade M1s, but I always shoot the same H&R that is pretty well beat up. If this bothered me, there are numerous places that I could send it and for a few hundred have it re-parkerized and the stock re-done or replaced. I also have one of the "new" Springfield Armory current production M1s. They don't have a real USGI receiver, but it looks the same and is a real tack driver. I paid $700 for it, so maybe that would be my limit.

Yeah, I don't know if I really need a "collector grade" rifle. If I can't shoot it, what good is it? Especially at a price tag of anything over say $500. That is just me though. You can't take any of this stuff with you when you die.

I'd bet that there are a lot more people out there who would pony up $5K than they have rifles to sell. They certainly don't have any troubles selling their M1Cs and M1Ds for similar prices.

I bought a service grade SA from CMP last year for $500 and am happy. I can't see myself spending up to TEN TIMES that for a rifle I wouldn't be shooting. (Shooting a NIW rifle will knock $$$ off the value, right?)

If I had enough money to waste on a collectable Garand NIW, then I would probably go ahead and shoot it too just to prove to people that a rifle is only good for shooting, not collecting dust. Or maybe I would sell it and buy enough Garands to outfit an entire high school shooting team and do something worthwhile. Sorry, collecting is cool and all, just not my bag of tea. Either it shoots or it isn't a rifle; its a paperweight.

Got to agree, it's not worth that much more. I don't "collect" so it would just be the difference between a used and new rifle. I'd love a new one, but not for that price. And I would definitely be shooting it.

Man, I'd love to have one. But $5,000? How many Mosins does that work out too? hehe....I couldn't spend that much on a safe queen. Yeah, I might talk myself into it as "an investment", but then, would I be able to part with it later? No. Better to leave these to the serious collectors.

I forgot the pistol was there. I was toting it around because I was reloading in the garage and it hadn't made it back to its home yet. It is sort of funny to take a picture like that and look at the things in your room and realize what some things are there in plain sight but you sort of forget about. Then you can wonder what other people notice and think about your craziness. For example, what does the red bumper sticker say up on the cork board?
