Hello all,

I'm in the process of building a Savage precision rifle in .308 and I want to do a conversion to allow the use of detachable box magazines. A while back, I purchased an M14 magazine with the intent of doing some modification so it would fit the Savage. After messing around with that mag for a while, I've decided it's a PITA and now I'm after a .308 box magazine that may lend itself better to my purposes.

So, if anyone out there has a magazine fed .308 battle rifle, I'd be interested in any information you can give me regarding the configuration of the top of the magazine. Pictures, measurements, and other wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Check into the Hk G3 mags that are out now. You can get them for $3 or less so if you need to cut up a few you're not out much.

Please let us know how it works out for you! I'm always looking for a good use for these Hk mags, they are too cheap to pass on right now.

have you thought to try using the magazine design used by Remington on their 7400/7600 series of rifles?

Actually, yes, I have. I was pondering this a few minutes ago and one possible fly in the ointment could be that the magazine won't protrude far enough downward...that is unless there are aftermarket 10rd magazines?

Ok, next question!

Are these Remington 74x series magazines thinner than an M14 magazine? They appear to be thinner, but it's difficult to tell from a picture. If indeed they are, these would be the obvious choice.

I just got in some saiga 25rd 308 mags. Need to add them to my data
Will also try and get a top down photo

Aloharover,

That's exactly what I've been needing! Thanks a bunch! I'm still trying to find out what the dimensions are on the Remington 742/7400/7600 mags, but I'm thinking that perhaps the FAL mags MIGHT just work!

I seen some pics where someone mounted a 20round m14 mag in either a ruger 77 or savage 110 series with hinged floor plate, can't remember how it was held in though,

I think they took the floor plate/trigger guard off, installed a regular blind box rifles trigger guard and mounted the mag in slot where the floor plate used to be.

the pics and write up how he done it was either on this board or on ar15.com.
