A security guard has foiled an attempted weapons heist in Queensland by snapping a key off in a lock.

The guard was badly beaten before being ordered to unlock a secured office in Proserpine, where a number of firearms were stored.

But he broke the key off in the door lock and his attacker ran off.

A 29-year-old man was arrested during a police doorknock of the area soon after the incident early on Monday.

A police officer was punched in the face during the arrest and a woman, aged in her 80s, was pushed to the ground as the man ran through her unit in an attempt to escape.

The woman wasn't injured and police managed to capture the man.

He will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday on a string of charges.
