A Shreveport police officer shot and killed a drug suspect after he kept going for the officer's gun, Police Chief Mike Campbell said today.

Michael Jacobs, 37, was shot Monday night after he ran from officers investigating complaints of drug activity around Youree Drive and East Olive Street.

Campbell said officers stopped a car and a passenger inside took off running. Officer Jason Person, a 28-year-old third-year officer, chased him down and they began wrestling.

Jacobs tried several times to grab the officer's gun, Campbell said at a news conference this afternoon. At one point Jacobs complained of breathing problems, Campbell said, and the officer relaxed his hold. That's when the officer was hit in the face, knocking his glasses off, Campbell said.

The officer told detectives he fired four shots as Jacobs was coming at him, Campbell said. Two shots hit Jacobs in the chest.

Campbell said one witness reported hearing a man complaining of breathing problems and another person saying "stop reaching for my gun." He would not identify that neighbor.

Campbell said parts of the struggle and shooting can be heard on audiotape from a microphone on the officer's uniform. The shooting happened outside the range of video cameras that are part of a monitoring system in police cars.

"There are things in there where you hear about 'stop resisting,'" Campbell said of the audiotape. "There are things that are consistent with witness statements and also Officer Person's statement."

Detectives found crack cocaine in Jacobs' pockets but no gun, Campbell said.

Police said Jacobs has five arrests in Shreveport for battery, burglary and aggravated assault.

It was the second police shooting in two weeks.

On Nov. 23, police fatally shot a man who allegedly grabbed a state hospital guard's gun and pointed it at her and a Shreveport officer, investigators said. That case is pending review by the district attorney.

The Police Department has come under scrutiny since the March fatal shooting of Marquise Hudspeth. Two officers shot and killed Hudspeth, saying they mistook the cell phone he pointed at them for a gun. The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating that case.

Anyone know what type of handgun Shreveport PD carries?

I know that area - plenty of drug activity there. Based on my knowledge, I'd say anyone parked there at night is automatically suspect. Sounds like a "good shoot" to me.

I presume the review is to decide which medal the officer should be awarded?
