I was intersted in a Austin Halleck 50 cal Percussion Mountain rifle. Being an compeditive blackpowder shooter and not being familar with this company I contacted them. There philosophy is that a company is just as good as there service and knowlege. My questions where ? what accuracy can I expect from a 5 shot group at 50 yr. Are your barrels manifactured at the same company in spain the cva, what loads do you recommend in your 50 cal mountain rifle.
Answer from company. You can expect a piecup size group , use a 50 cal ( 0.50 inch) ball and whatever patch you can find. Well, I guess I thought I had a bad day, was not to concerned and ordered one anyway. Now I just unpacked it and what can I say. Most spanish rifles (for less the half the price) are in my opinion actually better made. The only thing I need to give the people at Austin Halleck is that the wood has a nice grain but it is over shadowed with the ill fitting. The craftsmanship is dissapointing.
If you are willing to spend $ 500.00 to $ 600.00 for a rifle you are better of to by a parts kit from " Wolf of the track" or "Logcabin shop" or any other good supplyer and at least you start of with quality parts- and you own workmanship can't be worse ! Trust me......

That's dissappointing. Back when CVA was still making traditional muzzle loaders I built a Mountain Rifle from a kit. It came out as nice as a factory job and shot groups as good as I could see with the rudimentary sights. Probably 1 1/2" overall spread at 50 yards for five shots. I love the 54 caliber and the rifle makes a good conversation piece hanging over the fireplace. :)
