Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. I recently inherited 14 rifles and shotguns from my grandfathers collection. One of them is a Austin & Halleck 50 cal. black powder rifle. I wonder if anyone could help with the following,
1. What model is it
2. Where can I find a manual
3. What is the best load
4. Is it a good Black Powder rifle.
This is my first bp and any pointers and help with it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Bobby

Shunka,
Way to funny!
Wolfebytte,
Very good info in that thread. Im going to Cabelas today to go BP shopping. Btw what city do you live in?

Included is a manual, three ignition systems which are the 209, #11 & musket nipples

The Gunbroker ad listed in Post #2 mentions that it comes with 3 ignition systems which consist of the 3 different types of nipples that can utilize the percussion caps and/or primers listed above.
The Gunbroker ad shows what appears to be the 209 nipple that uses 209 shotgun/muzzle loader primers.
Does that nipple look like the one that's installed on your rifle?
If you don't have all 3 of those nipples, then a photo, description or measurement of the installed nipple would help to determine which one that you do have.

Wow all I can say is thank you to all that have helped me. After Articap told me about that i went out to the shed where i set up all the reloading gear and bp gear and found everything except the manual. Im going to go target shooting today. Im going to play with the load amount. Does anyone have a suggestion on load size. Im going to use copper jacketed sabots.

Load anywhere from 80 to 100 grains of powder, with 90 - 100 grains being the average hunting load.
777 powder loads would need to be reduced by 15%.
Be sure to clean it inside and out really well afterward.
The breech plug threads should have a little bit of anti-seize, breech plug grease or even Bore Butter applied to make it easier to remove afterward.
But if only taking a few shots that shouldn't matter too much.
Swabbing the bore in between shots, or every few shots to keep the bore clean makes loading easier and the shots more accurate.
Good luck and let us know how it shoots. :)

Laods and primers

I bought an Austin & Halleck new in '05. Great gun for accuracy, heavy in the field. It came with a beautiful wood stock, and a black one. I put in the H&R .32 ignition system and have never had a misfire. With a good scope, and 150 grains you are on to 200 yards. Best of luck
