Firearm storage under spotlight
By Jacinta Carroll
Friday, 25 April 2003

THE safe storage of firearms and ammunition has come under the spotlight as part of a State-wide compliance audit.,

Licensing officer with Chifley Local Area Command Sergeant John Tener said the audit got underway last Thursday and will continue throughout the year as police contact registered firearm owners to make arrangements to see their storage facilities.,

Sergeant Tener said the compliance operation was in response to an increase in the theft of firearms as a result of break and enters., Last year in Bathurst several firearms, including a handgun, were stolen from a home in Torch Street during a break and enter., Similar incidents have also occurred throughout the State.,

"What police are doing is basically contacting firearm owners and conducting an inspection of their storage facilities,†Sgt Tener said., "We'll also be looking at their firearms, registration papers and shooters' licence to make sure all comply with the current legislation,†he said.,

Under the Firearms Act, firearms must be stored safely, however storage requirements vary depending on the category of the firearm., Sgt Tener said it was in the interests of all firearm owners to familiarise themselves with the Firearms Act 1966 and its associated regulations.,
