There is a word for this. It begins with an "E" and rhymes with umpire.
Name one country that voted themselves into any empire. The crux of this article is that Australia would VOLUNTARILY enter the Union not that it would be absorbed through imperialism. Know the difference.
AUSTRALIA has been urged to seriously consider becoming the 51st state of the US.

Empire isn't neccessarily a bad thing. You should read "Empire" by Niall Ferguson.

Oh yeah, and I would be all for Australia becoming a state. Any country that allows it's women's soccer team to make a topless calender is okay in my book. I also like the roos, wallabys and koalas.

Yes! Bring on the republic and the bill of rights, but let it be an Australian Republic and an Australian Bill of Rights.

Seriously, I don't think will ever become a part of the US, but I can't rule it out. Who can? None of us know what will happen next year, let alone in 50 years.

But Dr Mosler is wrong about the republic referendum and an "unreformable" Australia. Regardless of what he and the Australian prime miniature might think the referendum was lost not because Australians preferred a monarchy, but because they did not want a president selected by the prime minister or the parliament which is the choice they were given.

I believe a majority of Australians do want a republic and a president elected by the people - and that is why the referendum was lost. It will eventually succeed, given time and the right question on the referendum ballot paper.

No flag of their own? A weak sense of nationhood? Where has he been hiding since 1971?

I wouldn't like to see Australia become a mere state of the US, though I do like many aspects of the American system such as the presidential system of government even though I think it has been prostituted to some degree over the years.

Fallingblock, there is some anti American sentiment in urban areas of Australia but I think its depth is over rated. As for the anti gun sheeple, of whom we have more than enough, maybe we could export them to California.

I love this country, with all its many faults, and I am proud of what it has achieved. We can make our own way in the world.

I think all involved would be much happier if Australia became it's own republic, with it's own BOR, and it's own government. Absorbing an entire nation into another is just asking for trouble we're not prepared for.

Don't you dare! Feed them to the crocs! We have enough of our own Kommiefornians. We don't need any more. In fact, if you have plenty of hungry crocs, maybe we can send some Kommiefornians to you!
