Any chance of our Australian brothers getting their firearms back any time soon? It seems that with the registry debacle in Canada and the rise in violence in the UK and Australia since the band, that common sense would dictate giving the people their arms back.

''Common sense'' HBK .... is sorely lacking in those places, amongst politico's ....... and frankly ... I think hell stands a better chance of freezing over than any concessions being made in the right direction.

Oz and UK I think are still set on further restrictions/bans .... crossbows, pellet guns .......... it gets more and more ridiculous, not to mention the ever changing bias in crime. The perps are nearly the good guys now ....... woe betide anyone as a ''victim'' who dares lay a hand on a perp and <shudder> ...... does him harm.

One day it may all backfire but ... that's a ways ahead yet methinks.

Most people in Australia don't concern themselves with guns or crime, as it has little effect on their daily lives. And if forced to think about such things, then the average Australian would simply respond in both cases along the lines of 'that's what the police are for'.

Sheople is the relevant term I believe.

I am certainly no expert, but I recently read an article that explained that in places like the U.K and Australia, the politicians have a lot more real power over the citizens than in the US. IIRC, they do not vote for individual candidates but for parties, i.e. the labor party won 40 seats and the tories 30. The parties then appoint the politicians. (I'm sure its more complicated than that)

In the U.S. if some idiot is elected and disappoints his district or whatever we can "throw the bum out" at the next election. But what if you can only vote for a party not an individual? In the U.S we have (some) pro-gun Democrats and (a lot of) anti-gun Republicans. But what if all the major parties in Australia and the UK support gun bans? How can you "throw the bums out"?

I guess the only way is to start a new party, and as Deadman said, the majority of the citizens there aren't too worked up about it. So it doesn't look good!

"Throwing the bums out" results in even worse 'bums' taking over

There have been a couple of pro-gun minor parties arise in the past decade, only to fail from lack of support. I have to add that these 'pro-gun' parties suffered constant attack by the media and urban left and were never able to establish themselves.

It would seem unlikely that Australians will regain any of their lost rights anytime in the near future.
