my first carry gun was a glock 17 (17 w/ +2 +1in chamber). i quickly realized that it was more than enough and changed to the glock 19 (15+1).

after two weeks or so, I switched to the hi-power (13+1) because it was my new gun for that week. a little later down the road, I carried the sig p226 (12+1) but the hot weather worn me out from all the walking. 1911 bug got me and I went with a full size 5" govt model (8+1). then carried a model 66 (6rnds). now my current is a 5rnd s&w 642 and dont feel outgunned.

doesnt make sense lugging big guns around when I can carry the 642 confortably in my pocket.
dont know why I waited so long (6 months) to come to conclusion that this was all I need.

I've always read most gunfights are over in 5 rounds or less...but I would suggest you carry one speed loader or strip.

I really enjoy carrying a Glock 17 or 19...or my little Kahr MK9, but I do put that little .38 in my pocket more often then carrying any of the others.

im just getting into guns for personal defense. And i bought a 7 shot 4" revolver as my first gun. My next gun will be a 7 shot snubbie taurus 817 because i cant bring myself to go down to 5 rounds. I guess i'll stay at lucky number 7.

Being over 40 and my wild years well past and having never even needed one round, I find 5 is plenty. :)

Funny. I was actually thinking of carrying a mini gatling gun or a mini mp5 for a spray and they better pray effect. If I own a glock before, i'll be carrying both a glock and a revolver today. I may also end up carrying two j-frame revolvers on both my ankles for additional weight training and to eliminate reloading and carrying extra speedloader or speed strips. It ain't bad if you are carrying a 5 shot revolver either. Enjoy.

A Glock 17 or 19 makes a dandy bedside gun for things that go bump in the night or a Zombie invasion, but a 5-shot snubby would be plenty good for me to carry around most any other day. I would prefer mine in a Ruger SP101 with light .357 loads, tho.

Colt dick special here. Only a little bigger than a Smith J frame with a full 6 rounds. Too bad they don't make them any more.

I guess if I were in the "hood" I'd bring more fire power but I feel perfectly protected when carrying my SP-101 5 shot. It's for personal defense and not for stopping a mini-invasion. If I'm at a Mall and a band a terrorist strike I'm no Bruce Willis saving the world, I'd be out gunned no matter what I carried. Semi-autos are great and I have several but the Ruger spends the most time with me. Yeah, with light .357 handloads.

It's really easier to carry my Kel Tec P11 than any of my revolvers and it holds up to 12+1 in a 14 ounce pocket sized 9mm. However, I find myself carrying a J frame gun a lot. I hope I never need it and if I do, the average shots fired in a typical gun fight is under 2 from what I read. Stands to reason. I'll be diving for cover probably FIRST before firing if I have the chance. I do carry a speed loader and speed strip with me just in case I need 'em, though. And, when I go to the big city, I usually carry a back up.
