well i am thinking about purchasing a new firearm or maybe getting one for my upcoming birthday and i am not really sure what i should look at. i already have a glock 19 which i love and carry occasionally.

for this next gun i need something:
1) low in price (preferably under $400, around $300 would be better)
2) reliable (not some piece of junk)
3) something my girlfriend can shoot and not be intimidated by (never shot before)

it doesnt need to be something for home defense or carry since i have my glock and 12 guage for that but if it could double as a carry piece that would be great as well.

right now i am thinking about some kind of .22 or a S&W 642. i have never shot a 642 before so i am not sure if that would be a gun that my girlfriend could shoot easily so if you have shot one of those input on that would be great.

other than that i am just looking for ideas. there are tons of guns out there and i dont know near as much as you guys. thanks and let me have it!

Everybody needs a .22! I recommend the Ruger MK II. These can be had used for a reasonable price. They are the model that preceeded the lawyer inspired MK III.

You can get a lot of cheap auto pistol fun out of one. Your girlfriend can feel comfortable with it, and she can use it for self defense if she is timid of your Glock.

It is not good to shoot hyper-velocity rounds out of one of these, but your girlfriend could keep it loaded with Stingers for home defense.

I was at the sandpit one day and a fellow that I see there frequently was trying to teach his wife to shoot. All he had was a .45 auto. I let her try my .22, and you should have seen the smile on her face!

you can find a taurus for about that much i just bought a cz 40p new for 300.00 sold a taurus model 85 like new for 250 .00 but you can get a very desent gun for that price just shop around have the money with you you dont no when a good deal comes aroun but when they do you want the cash ;) good luck

I have a Model 442, which I beleive is basically the same as a 642...a DA only Airweight snubby. I would not really recommend a DA only Airweight snubby for a beginner. They are not the easiest thing to master, and beginners need to build confidence with small wins. Start with the .22. Really, with the price of ammo, everybody needs one.

Just joined, but I feel inclined to share on this. The first new pistol I purchased was a Walther P-22 - while some would claim it's not terribly reliable, most of the problems with these weapons had to do with the old magazine designs. Walther has remedied this issue, and I have put over 500 rounds through mine so far - I have had 3 bad rounds in a box of 500 cheapo Remington hollow-points, but the pistol is not to blame. They're just duds. The P-22 is compact, it has an external safety, it's cheap cheap to shoot, and it's just fun.

I also have a Smith & Wesson Mod. 32-1 .38 S&W revolver and a Mauser 1914 .32. With my limited experience, I would concur that the .22 is going to be your best best - my personal choice would be the Walther P-22. It's right in your price range.

The Browing Buckmark .22 is also an excellent pistol. Some would also say it's a bit easier to clean than the Rugers. Many good .22 revolvers out there as well like the Ruger single action and S&W 617 or Taurus model 94 double action revolvers.

That's the perfect recipe for a .22 rifle - maybe a Marlin 25 or CZ 452?

A .22 is a very handy caliber to have in a hand gun. Not a man-stopper, most say, but there's not an over supply of BGs standing in line to get popped either.

A Bersa in .380 or 9mm is a very reliable pistol and in your price range, too.

A .22 and/or revolver would work well. Taught a girl I know how to shoot on a .357 (using .38s, of course). Look for used stuff, it can be a bargain if you know how to shop. Happy hunting.

WRONG! - - :D - - Everybody needs TWO .22s (or more iffin you like). :D

For $300 to $400 you can get some excellent .22s. In fact, if you would consider an "old" model, you can get Ruger Mark-IIs for around $250 to $275, or $300 to $325 in stainless.

Since you already have HD/SD guns, a .22LR is a must. Inexpensive (relatively) to shoot, fun, girl-friend friendly, good "trigger time" and did I mention just plain out FUN. Think about it. Where else can you go out and spend the entire morning shooting for less than $20 (yea, yea, I'm ignoring the range costs :D ) and that's if you bring soda pop and snacks. Otherwise it's closer to $10.

I know that it may sound silly, but one of the reasons I no longer own a .22: Conventional wisdom says that you're not supposed to dry-fire .22 rimfire guns.

But that's just me...

A .22 and Vang Camp can.

No, not a suppressor, a can of Pork-n-Beans.
Just open the darn thing and one does not even have to conceal this dangerous edged tool.
Open carry this can, and there is your best edged weapon.

<holds middle finger up to monitor>

See?

get whatever you and your girlfriend feel comfortable with and she especially will be able to shoot and handle with great proficiency :evil::evil::D:D:D:D

Ruger .22 auto.

several mentions of a ruger mk II above and here is another one. Same reasons as everyone else, reliable, gentle recoil, cost effective, and accurate. perfect for a new shooters confidence!
