I am a stainless fanatic. I have been researching lever guns and decided I wanted one that would fire 44 mag and special. I found the Marlin 1894SS and fell in love. The gun looks GREAT and I dream of owning it with a nice revolver in the same caliber.

From what I have gathered from google searches, Marlin made a limited run of these to see if they sold well enough to make regularly. And it so happens they aren't making it at the time

It seems available for order online at below MSRP ( or about MSRP after shipping and FFL ) but I am concerned they may become scarce.

I am a student who has lots of other things that money needs to be spent on like bills and repairing a damaged vehicle. But I crave this gun badly and would be disappointed if they became rare and skyrocketed in price.

Is it worth me saving every dime possible for a few months and neglecting other things I should be spending on, or will this be just as available in two years?

I look forward to any comments!

The .44 mag (1894SS) seems to be a standard catalog item for Marlin, and they should be around with a little digging or willingness to order. You wouldn't have to rush...

They are currently making a run of stainless .357 (1894CSS), and I'm not sure how long they will be around or when the run will stop. I stumbled upon one at the gun show last Saturday and snagged it without delay(!).

I paid $590 plus tax, which was fair. MSRP is about $750, and I've seen some places asking for $900 plus.

Aftermath,

The 1894SS has been in the Marlin catalog for a long time. And you are correct that it may not be being made at this time. As I understand it, Marlin schedules production based upon available inventory. In other words, when stocks of certain items get low, they will do a production run. Marlin did produce some stainless steel .357 lever guns, and this was limited production. They are very hard to find. My take on the 1894SS is that as long as it is a catalog item, it will be available, maybe not immediately, but within a few months. If the 1894SS does not appear in the 2010 Marlin catalog, then it might be time to "panic." The 1894 is, by the way, a great little gun.

They are nice rifles, and I would think they will be around for some time, but who knows they may be axed tomorrow. If so I would surmise the SS variant would be the first to go, as they seem to be less popular. If you need mechanical repair for your car, I would prioritize that; if the damage is cosmetic, I'd grab the rifle (as long as I could pay all of my bills) and fix the car later.
