Avoiding Leading!

Pistol velocity is nice but you have to make sure it goes out the barrel and more than 20 feet. If I remember correctly, this was for a truck/coyote gun, win 94 or something. For a no-recoil load that will knock something down, go to a lighter slug like the plinker that has some velocity and 100 grn.

I actually just loaded and shot some MBC lead yesterday using h4895.

The paper plates were FURIOUS at me and the wife !

Forgot how fun these were.

Depending on your rifle type ( as has been briefly mentioned) bullet diameter is going to be very crucial for your success.

Could you please let us know what kind of arm you intend to use these loads in ?

In that case I would suggest slugging the bbl. as has been previously suggested.

Micro-grove such as offered by marlin has been shown to be surprisingly uniform in dimensions from rifle to rifle, I cannot speak from experience on another maker.

With that measurement in hand, finding a bullet producer who can size you bullets .002 greater than shown should improve your leading results.

Hoppes Elite gun cleaner for me was also of great assistance. It does not magically prevent leading, but did seem to ease removing what leading was found after the bore had been properly treated. It also worked really well on copper, I'm assuming for the same chemical reasons.

OAL made some difference as well. For me, using the MBC bullet, I was able to reduce fouling by seating the bullets to 2.510...right in the crimping grove on the bullet. My deduction was simply that this changed the cartridge pressure, and resulted in less soot. Originally I used 2.530 I believe.

Case flaring also helped. Not shaving the bullets left the lead the dimensions I ordered it in. Not shaving off that lead makes a big difference in obturation.

Powder seemed to make the least difference of all in leading, just the largest difference in performance categories other than leading. Unique was cute, 2400 I dont use for anything else, although it worked fine, H4895 worked significantly better for me.

GOT ALL THAT ?

In short, I highly doubt that one tweak will make a difference in your leading.
I also doubt that your first, or even your tenth recipe will be the end of your tweaking to find acceptable performance.

Finding what worked for me took some stumbling, even with expert guidance (here) but left me with loads that are very inexpensive, have reduced recoil, and are minute-of-plate out to 75 yards with irons, 100 ish with glass.

Just don't try and chase jacketed performance with lead. Well, chase, but don't be too unhappy with your comparisons.
Its a long and dark bench breaking challenge that for me ended not with disappointment and failure, but an understanding of what really lead :)neener:) us to using superior ( although more expensive) ballistic components.
