Hey guys,

Not very familiar with blackpowder shooting, so please excuse some of my innaccuracys in describing this. but i wanted to share something that happened to me at the local range the other day. I think most of you guys will appreciate this.

Well me and a buddy went to the local range yesterday and stayed for a good three hours. Brought a lot of hardware, and did a lot of shooting. I'm very social when im at this range, and always like talking with like minded people. Anyway, after a while we take abreak, and notice an older gentleman getting set up to shoot what (at the time) i could only describe as the sharps style rifle from "Quigley Down Under"! Well needless to say, with his first shot, i was astounded by the power of this weapon.

My friend and I start talking to this guy and before we know it were all rambling on about this that and the third. We ask about the rifle. He tells us (in the coolest british accent i've ever heard) that it is a handmade buffalo rifle, made custom by a guy in Missouri. The rifle stock is wood, the barrel stainless and had an octagon style barrel. He informed us that he aquired the rifle from a long-time friend who is no longer physically able to shoot, and treasures it dearly. He then proceeded to talk about it for a while. He shows us the round, a 45-90 SPENCER if i remember correctly. It was very large to say the least. He informed us that the round is somewhat similiar to the 45-70 govt. He is very social, and extremely cool. So anyway we go back to shooting our own guns.

Well about 2 ceasefires later, he walks over to us and starts checking out our hardware, complimenting me on my stuff. One in particular caught his eye: my stainless Taurus Judge. (I kno, i kno, of all things). I let him touch off a few federal 000 buck .410 loads and hes gotta smile on his face. All of a sudden hes like "well, come have a go with mine will ya?"

At this point im like...wow. Yes ok, i can do this. He explains the flip up ladder style sight system, and how the double trigger works. He explains that after setting the trigger, to be VERY careful with your trigger finger bc the pull on it is very very very very light. I dont remember exactly but it wasnt even in lbs, it was in ounces!!! I halfway believed him. But darn if the old man wasnt right! That thing went off as soon as i THOUGHT about resting my finger on the trigger! Recoil wasnt bad at all, considering the weight of the gun. Not sure where my shot went on the target but he was putting down 3-4 inch groups at 100 yrds, and was complaining about having an off day!

We end up talking to this guy for about an hour straight. He tells us of his days in scotland, london, all sorts of places. He explains to us how bad the UK is about gun control, and that street crime is through the roof! One story involved his daughter (attending manchester...impressive) being robbed at gunpoint for her stereo by two 12 yr old "twits" as he called them. We talked about a range of topics, all of which he was very knowledgeable about. Very intelligent man. The classic british gentleman. We exchanged numbers, and seeing as how he lives on a nearby golfcourse that i play at frequently, will probably soon either go shoot again or play golf.

Sorry bout the long post, but this whole experience just blew me away. It was my first experience with a firearm like that, and man was it AWESOME! rant over:)

Logan thanks for the write up ... looks like we have another Prince of Darkeness, Lord of Soot, Black powder Shooter...welcome to the Darkside. Sure sounds like you had some fun makin' Smoke. Your hooked for sure I can tell :O)
Good on ya mate!

Days like that are what it's all about !!! You definately met one of the good guys. Thanks for sharin' the tale.

Great story -- nice read. Thanks for posting it.

I too have had some great experiences meeting interesting people at the range but haven't yet gotten into exchanging guns. It's often guys with wives and a kid or two -- a family outing.

LOL Don't forget the know-it-alls that wanna impress their friends with their expressed impressions of what's not really going on around them. Seen them a time or three.

Also remember the dudes who like to observe and correct others around them -- on stances, holding styles, minor safety issues -- although I've never had one come up to me personally.
