Looking at getting a new axe. My walmart $15 hatchet isn't cutting it. I was looking for something middle of the road. Not a full sized axe but bigger than a hatchet. Not looking to spend more than $100. This will be used for camping, canoe trips, grouse camp and so on. nothing to heavy duty, I have a chain saw for that. Thinking about the Wetterling large hunters axe, runs about $80. Anybody have any suggestions?

A good tomahawk might serve your needs well if you are not splitting a ton of wood. If so, a dedicated splitter like the hatchet sized Estwing maul and a tomahawk with a good sharp edge might serve your needs very well. Tomahawks are very versatile.

Estwing, Wetterlings.. way different but either. They don't sell them down at the walmarts, I think. A few years ago Husqvarna was a real sleeper.. I think they sold out to one degree or another though.
Nothing sucks more than a sucky hatchet/axe.

I've had excellent luck with Wetterlings. They're noticeably harder, and hold a significantly better edge. They'll take an incredible edge, and still are reasonably tough.

Other than random cheap crappy hatchets, I only have experience with Estwing but I have been very happy with mine.
