I want to build a 7mm TCU rifle out of a Savage Axis action but I don't know whether to buy a 223 rifle or a 308 and change the bolt head to a 223? I'm afraid if I get a 223, I'm about 99% sure the 7TCU cartridges won't fit down in the magazine.
Any advice would be great.

the OAL for 223 is 2.25 and the mag of a bolt rifle might allow it and the bullet can be slightly seated more. it is a real good round

308

For one, the 223 mag length is 2.26 on an AR. Not sure about the Axis but i would doubt its long enough. Second, the 308 mag length will allow you to load about any length of bullet you want.

I have a savage striker in 22-250, which also has a short magwell. Makes converting it to another caliber like 243 or 308 an issue.

I don't think I have ever measured the mag on my axis before I gifted it but the mag length on my m11 223 in 2.5 in. 20221026_194441.jpg

Don't think that the axis would be any longer so a larger caliber would probably be better for your 7 tcu.
