Ala-freaggin'-Bama!
Well I got my new 580-series mini out again yesterday for some fun. I wasn't going to shoot anything but quallity ammo (and mostly handloads at that) through it but we had just got a shipment of cheap stinky wolf in (55gr FMJ) so I decided it would be a cheap way to test all the mags out (only had factory 5 rd. first time out) I had half a dozen of the current production promag 20rd blue steel mags one 10 rd. of the same lineage and 3 factory 20 rounders (found the last guy that still had em for 39.95 and bought his last 3)

the ruger mags do have a quallity edge that is undeniable...I will probably buy at least 3 more. They fed flawlessly period....they dang well better at that price!

Promag 20 rd. blue steel - They look almost exactly the same and while the feed-lips are a bit shorter they seem to work just as well...not quite as slick dry feeding ammo through the action but live fire 100% I think possibly adding the slightly beveled/polished ramp-like spots for each shoulder to glide over if bumped down a bit into the mag like the ruger mags would make them just as slick. That said you can't improve on 100% so I guess I'll leave them alone! I shot all mags full loaded to empty them reloaded 5 rounds in each a few times (most malfs are in the last few rounds with rifle mags anyway IMHO) for $15-20 the promags seem like a heck of a good mag...they actually snap in and out better than the ruger mags do. There is actually less wobble that the ruger mags to (only a small amount on them but NONE with the)

Promag 10rd- fed fine but holds 9 if you want it to seat it. The problem upon takedown is the plate under the floorplate is too tick and plastic instead of sheat-metal like the ruger factory 5rd. The factory part is available for $.99 at midway though so that should solve that. Other than that it's fine...they need to adress that issue though...it would be a simple fix for them...somebody probably changed the part after the mag was designed and nobody noticed the impact.

Gun worked flawlessly digesting 250-ish rounds wolf and some american eagle...shot 4-5MOA with wolf 3-4 with AE Did not leave scope mounted much though. What got me was iron sighted I shot it as well as I can my AR with peeps at 100 (I have to aproximate target as I can no longer see the dang dot without a scope-LOL) Several groups ran coffee can sized aprox 5x5" off a shooting bag. Pretty dense in the center of the group...I'm sure someone with younger eyes could do a bit better. That is pretty good for stinky russian ammo though...I was surprised. That was also about as good as it's favorite 2.5-4" ammo when I went iron sighted last time so likely that is just the best my eyes can do.

I was pleased all the mags worked so well...I give the promag 20's a thumbs up -though I still want a few more ruger 20's. The more I shoot the little gun the more I like it...very fun plinker and carries very well. I fine tuned the iron sights a bit this time towards the end. It seems a bit high or a bit low are the option so I went with a couple inched high @ 100 AT 25 yards standing offhand it was a touch high (right over bullseye) about 1.5" but I felt like I was rocking a bit so I may be partially to blame....at 15 it was dead on and shot about 1" group. It apears to not need as big a point blank offset as an AR does thanks to the lower sights

Thanks for the report... I have a couple aftermarket 30-rounders and a 40-rounder for my ranch rifle and they all malfunction on occasion... feeding jams, real nasty, cases dented, etc. The factory 20-rounder always works but I sure wish I could get a factory 30-rounder or twelve.

I bought a polmer PM 30 to test but it fit so poor it never made it to testing...I'll see if they'll swap it for a 20 steel. I may try their 30 rd steel but I like the way the gun handles with the 20's and they seem to work well so far.

i got the promag twentys, so far, maybe 500 rounds, mostly slow fire, ocassional runs of 5 or so fast fire, i have not had a single failure to feed. remington UMC and wolf ammo.

hey guys,
buy the junkers, cut the top half (feed lips) off square , get the 5 round factorys, dissamble square up the bottom half and silver solder them together.

use the longer spring and the factory follower and that nice little plastic bottom can be fitted with a little extra work. i painted with that krylon hammered metal paint until i found out about DuraCoat.

the first one i did holds 25 rnds. got about $25.00 tied up in them guess you could do the same with 30 rnders.

keep the metal on the factory feed lips cool as not to soften the heat treat.
(water soaked shop towels)

i used one of those map gas ,oxygen torch set ups you see at wallace world. Brownells fluxed HI-FORCE 44 solder . if you have a disc/belt sander it makes it real easy to keep the joints fitted. magnets help hold the parts in alignment.

have fun always
