[B]Puma M92 Levergun in “45 Magnum”?[/B]

I don’t mean to disparage Big 5 Sporting Goods — I shop there, but their ad in last Sunday’s newspapers for “Puma M92 Lever Action Rifles in .44, .357 and 45 Magnum” peaked my interest. I’m in the market for one of their carbines (stainless, 16” bbl in .454), so I went to check one of them out. I asked the sales guy which calibers they had in stock, and he mentioned “45 Magnum.” I asked to see it, liked the gun a lot, but noticed that the barrel was stamped... “45 Colt.”

Salesmanship/puffery at its best.

I’ve heard nothing but good about the Puma leverguns, but I thought that the “Magnum” moniker was a bit misleading.

Your thoughts? Can the M92 take a scope??

.45 Magnum is a bit misleading on a .45 Colt. But they're excellent rifles. I have one in .454 and I love it. Real big boomer. They can take a scope but are better served with a receiver sight, I have a Williams on mine. It's a lightweight handy rifle with a ball bearing on glass action. The only gripe with mine is that I wish it had better wood on it. Oh well, if it was any prettier I wouldn't take it in the woods.

the magnum part is misleading. But I can see the purpose of calling it such, so that the more mislead gunbuyers do not thing they are getting a colt 45 - and think their new rifle is capable of shooting .45 ACP.

You can get a Model 92 in .454 Casull. Then you really do have a ".45 Magnum." And you can shoot .45 Colt out of it as well.

You can also get one in .480 Ruger. That just keeps tempting me!

The ad writer did not put the "mag" after .44
When told to or when he discovered his mistake he inserted the word in the wrong place

The counter person only knows as much about guns as he reads in the sales flyers

I have the same gun, made by Rossi, but labeled "EMF Hartford model 1892", 45 Colt, 24" octagonal barrel. It is my favorite firearm. More accurate than I am, this thing will eat anything from puny cowboy loads to loads that will make you think you are shooting a steel-buttplate 12 guage (ie. ouch). I only have about a thousand rounds thru mine but with zero problems. Definitely recommended.

edit: to answer your question about the scope, mine has no provision for a scope. I've read that you will have to have it drilled/tapped if you want to do that. Plus, it's a Winchester design meaning it ejects brass straight up, meaning the scope will have to be forward of the breech like a "mountain gun".
