Back to basics with AR15

Now that I can't shoot 3 gun any more (physical issues), I have gone to basic on the 2 HD rifles for my wife and I, being carbines with fixed carry handles, Magpul furniture, 2 point sling, and a light. Wanted simple and light weight, and now the former "match" rifle has a 20" barrel and is set up for target and predator shooting.

That is the cool thing about the AR. With the proper tools, you can change up a configuration to suit your needs.

I still enjoy hitting pop cans and water bottles out at 200 yards with the iron sights on my Colt SP-1.

that would be me one day , if I ever buy an AR, it has to be "vanilla", and with
carry handle of course !
;)

If I could own one it would be a plain jane A1 with a 20 inch pencil barrel.

I've got an A4 configuration now. KAC RAS rail system, mostly just uses a light for some of the stuff I do. But I'm an iron sights guy through and through.

The only two rifles without irons are my my hunting rifle and my .22 bolt gun (so I can see the holes at 100 yards)

Doing a project on a cold weather Colt right now.
M4 Magpul version, FDE.
Magpull oversized triggerguard for gloves.

No optic, rear plastic sight replaced with much more durable detach carry handle & A2 sights.
Nothing electric on it at all. :)
Batteries can die quick in extreme cold temps.

No optic, even the best glass can fog or blur if it gets cold, wet & snowy enough.
Very basic Vickers sling, instantly adjustable via a short pull-strap, reduce fumbling with gloves or shooting mittens.
Quick detach push-button rear swivel to get out of it in a hurry in any position.

Extended BCM charging latch for gloves.
Also replaced Colt carrier group with the BCM group, extra power on the extractor spring, at a minimum.

Otherwise, nothing added to increase weight or bulk.

I want light & simple.

Dpris,

I read a posting on another forum not long ago. Think the guy was from Idaho or Montana. Anyway, I understand that the temps can get into the negatives (way, way into the negatives). The guy in the pics was bundled up like the Michelin man, trekking through the terrain on skis. His go to was a very basic rifle similar to what you've described, and for the purpose of cold weather shooting. He might've had a light mounted, but nothing else other than a sling.

Your post made me think of that. My hat is off to you and others like that. I've never seen cold anywhere close to that, and am not sure I could function. I do know that I have no desire to see that kind of cold!!

You guys carry on! Hats off to ya for sure.
