You probably have seen the TV ad by Michael Bloomberg's gun control group in which a man, presumably an estranged husband or boyfriend, breaks into a home and points a handgun at a terrified woman. No shooting is seen, but we are supposed to envision a murder.

But some gun shops are saying that they are getting handgun applications from women who have seen the ad and are determined that they will not become helpless victims. Of course, our noble governor pushed through a law to make self defense harder, but that does not seem to discourage these applicants.

Did former NYC Mayor Bloomberg's ad backfire? Did it change any minds at all? Did it help promote his supposed anti-crime goal or are people seeing through the pretense and recognizing that he really wants the total disarmament of the American people and a Bloomberg dictatorship?

This add is also being parodied at several places on the internet. Everytown is misusing copyright law (IMHO, IANAL) to get these parodies taken down, but the damage is done.

My first thoughts on seeing the actual commercial (linked from a firearms blog last week) were that it was going to be a pro gun commercial pointing out how a woman might need a gun to protect herself and her children from a larger and stronger adversary. Only the last seconds showed that it was meant it to be anti-gun, but my initial perception of "she needs a gun" was still stronger than the anti gun message they were trying to push. I can see why it is working for our side even without the parodies.

Maybe we should offer to run this add for Everytown if MBB runs out of money?

My home town had no murders last year. One drug related killing by shooting I believe so far this year.

We had a killer convicted for murders in 2004 and 2006: he knifed a woman in a boarding house and killed a couple in their home with a baseball bat.

A short while back a local community had an Iraq War vet murdered in his home by two men using a hammer and knife.

A gun is good to have to defend against larger, stronger or more numerous adversaries, and not necessarily to defend against an adversary with a gun.
