Background check for renting a firearm?

Never heard of one requiring a background check. They do sometimes have other rules, like you have to have your own gun to rent one of theirs, or have someone with you. These are usually anti-suicide measures.

Indiana does

Dealer requirements before sale, rent, trade, or transfer
35-47-2.5-4 Sec. 4. (a) A dealer may not sell, rent, trade, or transfer from the dealer's inventory a handgun to a person until the dealer has done all of the following:
(1) Obtained from the prospective purchaser a completed and signed Form 4473 as specified in section 3 of this chapter.
(2) Contacted NICS:
(A) by telephone; or
(B) electronically;
to request a background check on the prospective purchaser.
(3) Received authorization from NICS to transfer the handgun to the prospective purchaser.
(b) The dealer shall record the NICS transaction number on Form 4473 and retain Form 4473 for auditing purposes.

This afternoon we were discussing why there is a waiting period to buy guns in CA, but no waiting period to rent them.

I might be wrong but I believe the requirement to do a nic check on rentals is require if the weapon is going to leave the premises/control of the owner . I know they don't do one at the rental places here in WA

Felon?

Is a felon allowed to rent a weapon for on-site use if that business doesn't require a renter to be a firearm owner?

I understand that if the business renting firearms for on-site use requires a person to be an owner of a firearm, that business assumes that he is legal to own a firearm and has gone through an NICS check, not so much to prevent suicides.

Felon?

So, a felon can rent a firearm for on-site use if someone is with him?

I can understand the requirement to own a firearm in order to rent one, since the rental business assumes that if he owns the weapon, he's already gone through the NICS check.

Are firearm rental suicides more than just an occurance or two, or an internet myth?

Suicides do occur, there have been two that I know of at the range I use. The last one about two months ago. I never saw anything on the news or in the paper about it, it seems they keep it quiet. Probably to prevent a rash of copycats from doing the same.

They have a sign that says if you have been convicted of a felony, etc, etc you can not rent a firearm, but I have never seen them do any background checks.

:what:

THEY SHOULD!

I have no problem renting a gun but you should at least know who you're renting it to!
