As in carrying a pistol while backpacking, not carrying a pistol in a backpack.

How do y'all carry when out in the woods wearing a backpack with a hip strap? I've been wondering about this as my hip strap (when worn above the hipbones as intended) interferes with my normal carry preference, which is OWB at 4:00.

I use an El Paso Saddlery "tanker" holster. This is a shoulder holster like the WWII pilots (and some tank commanders?) used.

It has the advantage of being rather slim, so the weight of the pistol doesn't "hang" off your pack straps and bang around. For a R-handed shooter, the holster is typically worn low on the chest at around 10 o'clock. There is a belt tie-down, which can be used or ignored. Security strap for running or bending over a lot, and sometimes I don't use it, either.

I like it a lot. Simple, quality construction.

I open carry with a Kydex paddle holster at 2-3 o'clock on the outside of the waist strap of my backpack. It is very comfy and easy to get to quickly.

You might try a chest rig too. If it does not interfere with your chest strap.

There are some great rigs for carrying while backpacking.

I use a version of this:

I carry a 329PD in .44 in a chest holster. Not only do I have quick access to my revolver, I can carry my pack comfortably.

If concealment is an issue, just throw on a light jacket or hiking shirt and there's your concealment garment.

I bet one of the products recommended thus far will serve your purposes just fine!

Good luck and have fun...see you on the trails!
