Bad Day Rabbit Hunting

Sorry for your loss!......the puppy in my avatar died unexpectedly, it was one of our son's family's first dog. I became reluctantly attached to him, feeling your pain.............

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

This is why we love our dogs so much, and it hurts so much to loose them.
I almost didn’t get another dog when my last one passed away unexpectedly, but after almost a year I did. He has been a most loyal friend.
Red rick, get back in the field as soon as you can, Jasper will always be with you.
Dammit I think I have over watered my beard.

I got back out there Saturday . It started raining soon after we started hunting . The dogs jumped 1 rabbit and lost it and then it started raining hard enough to make us stop hunting . We went back to the house and it stopped raining soon , so we went back .

They jumped 3 rabbits and we killed 2 . I should have killed the other one also , but he lost the dogs for a few minutes and I went and got a sandwich out of the truck and while I was eating my sandwich , I saw him pass within 10 yards from where I was standing .

I did make one lucky shot on the rabbit I killed . While the dogs were running him in the thick woods , I dropped down on one knee to see better and the rabbit circled back , coming to me . He stopped , listening for the dogs about 45 yards from me in some light cover . I had a improved cylinder choke tube in my shotgun , so I didn't think I would get him at that distance and I had some brush to shoot through . He went down and was dead instantly . When I cleaned him I only saw like two hits on him , but one went right through the heart .

Soon after that it got to raining real hard , we were soaked before we got back to the truck .

When we got back we cleaned the rabbits and then I told my nephew that we need to take our guns down and oil them real good . He doesn't take care of his things very good and that was a brand new shotgun that he just bought a couple of weeks ago and he loves it . I knew if I went home that he would not take it apart and oil it . He told me that he was not going to take the barrel off and I told him that he was and he was going to remove the bolt and trigger assembly before it rust . It was a good thing we did , they were really wet inside . He did a good job putting his back together , I didn't have to help him at all . I hope I taught him something and he learned not to neglect his stuff and wait until it is to late and the damage is done .

We then fried the 2 rabbits and I am stuffed .

I think we are picking up a 7 month old puppy tomorrow . It is a well breed dog like 3 of ours are .

I was very happy with how Bandit ran today ( our 16 month old gray dog ) and how well the puppies ran . I still miss Jasper though , he was special .

This was a terrible day for me rabbit hunting . We killed 9 by 2:00 o'clock , but my best dog was killed in a freak accident . The land owner was driving my nephew back down the dirt road to get his truck and ran over the dog we think . He was barely moving ( you could walk that fast ) and I guess the dog got up under a tire . My nephew heard the dog yelp and they stopped and saw the dog laying in the dirt road about 30 feet behind them and he was dead . They never felt a bump or anything .

I feel so bad right now , he was a great dog already at 15 months old , not just hunting , but he also was a dog that would have made a great pet . I can not think of any faults in him .

There are 3 more weeks left in the season , but right now , I do not feel like going anymore this year . This was my first pack . I have a 3 year old , a 16 month old and two 6 month old puppies that just started running with the other dogs last week . I don't think my pack is going to be strong enough without Jasper , he really backed up the 3 year old , they made a good team .

RIP Jasper , I will miss you .
Very sorry for your loss.

My nephew and I finished off the season today . We hunted for 2 hrs. this afternoon and the dogs ran good . They jumped 4 and we killed 2 , both bucks . We also got 2 new dogs two weeks ago, Jasper's brother and a 1/2 sister to the Blackcreek puppies we have . We named him JB after Jasper . He looks a lot like Jasper and sounds like him , but he does not hunt like him and is not working with our other dogs . I told my nephew to work with him a few months and if he still doesn't improve and work with our dogs , give him back to the breeder . The new puppy that we got is doing great , it took her only a week to start running with the others , she is only 8 months old . We named her Pearl , to go with her 1/2 sisters names , Diamond & Ruby . All three of them look like they came out of the same litter . She was the first dog to my dead rabbit today and she just started staying with the pack for the whole hunt about a week ago .

It has been around 10 years now since my friend passed away but I’ll never forget dove hunting just 2500 yards or so from his home and watching him make his way down to where we were sitting and he stopped and got out for a bit. He made his way down and said he couldn’t hunt that day he had ran over his dog.

The next year, unrelated or course, he passed away. I miss his company.

I'm sorry to read about your loss. Definitely a bad day.

I'm glad you were able to get back out though. Jasper would approve. Kuddos on mentoring your nephew as well.
