Baiting Yotes

I have read in a place or two on the net about people breaking a rabbit's leg and putting it in a live trap to lure in yotes.

Personally, I don't know if I can break a rabbit leg and let it suffer severe pain like that. I have a soft spot for rabbits...

I'm interested in hearing some experience chime in. I would love to get into predator hunting hardcore in the near future.

i know an old timer who used to use kittens. he would put two of his barn kittens in a cage and stick it in the shade under a tree in the middle of his pasture. he swears that the yotes wouldnt even care if you were standing waving a pole they were driven so crazy my those little buggers.

just dont know if my tender little heart could stomach it though (even though they dont get hurt i suppose).

My buddy and I are baiting some know we haven't hunted over any yet though. We took hide scrapings off deer hides from the locker and put them in a 5gallon bucket and froze them and set them out like big meat popsicles. Mine is probably going to be gone tonight I checked it this morning and it was down to a little chunk about the size of a football. When the snow was on the ground there was tracks EVERYWHERE but there hitting it in the night.

Breaking a rabbit's leg seems needlessly cruel and good ammunition for antis.
However, I've heard of hooking a rabbit up to a current so that when it pulls it gets shocked. Maybe a shock collar for a small dog with a remote. neither would kill the little beast, but would get the desired effect.

Buy ya a big rooster, put it in a cage, hang it in a tree about 10 ft off the ground, in an area with plenty of good shooting lanes. Hang it the night before, then be around right at daylight and you will pull yotes, fox, bob cats etc in real quick. That rooster will start crowing early (3-4 am) and that is like a dinner bell to most varmints. Come daylight they are going to be waiting for that rooster to come out of the tree. BTW it is a real good idea to use a cage with wire similar to a live trap, because coons, possum, skunks, minks, and every other thing you can think of will climb the tree to try and get it.

We have hunted over gut piles before, but yotes are smart. They know you are not going to be out in the middle of the night. BUT they have to wait till morning for that chicken dinner to fly out of the tree.

They come to mouth calls pretty well, I don't know why you would buy a rabbit and torture it when you can buy a distress call and sound just like one without the torture. That's pretty cruel just to kill a few yotes.

I've toyed with the idea of getting or borrowing a kitten and irritating it so that it meows, but not torturing it. Mortally wounding an animal and sitting it as bait is pretty low-class, I just can't get on board with that.

Seriously mouth and electronic calls work great, I don't know why so many folks think they need bait. Sure the occasional opportunistic bait sitting will work but most serious predator hunters use calls. If you really want good info on how to kill coyotes, visit http://www.predatormasters.com/forums. There a whole lot of guys who have a TON of predator calling experience, and the info in general is WAY better than what you will get over here.

Break a leg!! Yes it does work but it's messed up to do it. My dad would do it when we would hunt dogs when I was younger. With all of the calls on the market today I don't know why a person would do that? To each their own. I use the PreyMaster4 from Walmart. Paid $100 for it. Has about 20 diferent calls programed into a SD card. You can buy different cards & the coolest feature is it'll make two calls at once. If your just getting into varminting I'd suggest it.

I really love N. Idaho!!! We can hunt for Dogs at night as long as we carry a spotlight. It's a hoot!! Clear full moon night. Find a clearing get the cottontail call going wait 15-20mins sweep over the clearing with the spotlight for eyeshine & BANG!!! You all should move to N. Idaho. We got pletty of room & we'll ALWAYS have our guns!!

Hey guys I guess I started this and then forgot about it, but I don't think I could torture any living creature either, that sounds rather morbed to me. I was speaking of hanging a deer carcus, the way we clean our deer is we hang 'em and basically debone them leaving the hide, guts , and bones. that's what I take to my bait station, I don't freeze it, although some folks do, I usually hang it so that they can reach about half of it and they'll hang around trying to get the rest by standing on hind legs, but they have to work at it, and that's usually when I pick 'em off.
