The enclosed pics are of my original Baker Rifle which was produced and issued to the British Army around 1812. It was probably used in Portugal against the French and then re-issued to a Malitia in the UK.
It is a 'split stock' Baker and the lock was made at the Tower of London.
It has only been fired once ( by me ) since my Grandfather bought it in Lisbon before the 1929/45 war.
Some parts are new ( sling, flint ) some have been repaired and probably 90% is original. The bayonet is also original, and 18" blade on a brass handle.

Effective killing range:- 300 yards +
Caliber: .615-.70
Weight: 9lb 6oz.
Rate of fire: 1-2 per min ( Tap Loaded 3 per min)

This compares with the Brown Bess smooth bore which had an accurate range of 75-80 yards with an expert shot probably doing some damage at 100 yards.

It is beautifully balanced and well made.
Enjoy!
Duncan

Wow!

Thanks for sharing those pictures of your Baker rifle. Are there any markings on it besides what you've shown us? I'm wondering if it could be traced to any unit like 95 (Rifle Brigade), 60 (King's Royal Rifle Corps), KGL (King's German Legion) or some local militia?

Markings.

Hi Gary.
The markings, mostly on the barrel are proof marks and acceptance stamps I am told. There is a brass escutchen plate on the top of the stock with 434 on it but it is probably a registry number.
The attached photo is of the barrel stampings which are difficult to read.
Cheers
Duncan

Don't suppose you could take a few pics of the sights and sight picture. My knowledge of the Baker is also just from Sharpe.

What I find funny is I could probably load and fire the thing but I've never seen one prior to this.
