FYI... if you are saving up for a good bali and can't afford a solid trainer, placing a little tape on the edge of a live blade works well. The main reason I'd go with a trainer is so I can practice in places where possessing a bali is a felony.

Besides the imtimidation factor, why would you want to throw your knife around?

I would be reminded of the scene in Raiders of The Lost Ark where the Swordsman guy was swining his sword all over the place only to have Indianna shoot him.

Is flipping a bali intimidating? It's all show for me (tricks don't mean you are good at knife fighting). Flipping is fun as heck for those moments during commercials or other breaks in the day to day routine at home. Kinda like twirling a chopstick or lighter or quarter in your fingers.

The bali isn't my tacticool blade.

If I had to carry a bali on the street, I certainly wouldn't do the fancy stuff.

What would be intimidating is if the bad guy deploys any blade quick as heck and stands balanced in a ready position, ready for you to make a mistake. Of course if you are thinking that you'd do the Indy Jones thing and shoot him, just replace the blade with a handgun.

What I'm saying is that, while knife tricks are fun at home, in a fight they only increase your chances of making a boo boo.

Situation I observed 6 years ago:
Man whips out a bali-song knife and starts flipping it.
Other man punches the knife fighter square in the face.
Knife fighter goes down and stays down.
Other man picks up the bali-song, puts it in his pocket and walks away.

Situation I observed in my youth:

A friend from High School pulls out a Frost Cutlery Bali-Song copy and attempts to impress his friends with typical butterfly knife antics. The only problem is, he unwittingly (key term here) held onto the wrong handle when he put the knife in motion and wound up with a serious incision across the top of his index finger which severed the tendon completely.

It was repaired, but last I remember, he still couldn't flex his index finger or shoot right handed. I guess thats the price you pay for acting stupid with sharp things while trying to impress others.

Balisong manipulations are fun, adictive, cathartic, challenging to learn, impresive to many, bound to get you cut more than a few times, and have nothing what so ever to do with knife fighting.

My view is this: if a person demonstrates great skill and competence in manipulating a bali, a wise observer might (rightly or wrongly) assume that the wielder is also skilled in the associated fighting techniques. Speed, agility, skill, and knowledge are, after all, what makes the knife a fearsome tool. Certainly, a brief display of knife weilding talent would be intimidating to most.

No doubt, the art of manipulating balis is a lot of fun. But with such strong interest, serious use of the tool would be equally worthy of study and practice.

So, I think it would be wrong to assume that a skilled manipulator of the bali has no fighting skills.

QKRTHNU with his reply above was close to the truth in his observation. Confronted with a combined threat and demonstration of such skill......I would shoot first and ask questions later. Otherwise: RUN!!!

Or, you might use the Sylvester Stallone technique ("The Specialist") and drive the individual off of the bus by kicking him through of one of the (not open) windows.

Let me get my word in

Okay.. Ive had my bali for about 4 weeks now, and I can do all of the intermediate and a few expert techniques on balisongxtreme.com. So far, ive showed just about all my friends tricks and beleive it or not they all literally dropped their jaw. And for those of you who think you would do a trick when your in a fight your rediculous. And about carrying a gun instead, I myself am 14 years old, and that kind of thing is hard to get a permit, and its quite costly. Many of you claim if some one was doing a trick you would just punch them in the face, well my opinion on that is your full of it becaues youde probably be too busy awing their trick. And if people have the nerve to spend over 100 hours learning their difficult tricks, thus them having a feel for it and could probably do some damage with it. I must also agree, you can get cut, but NEVER severely, its the weight of the bali itself thats cutting you, which is under half a pound so it would have to be EXTREMELY sharp in order to cut through the skin, let alone a tendon. Its extremly fun, Ive had trouble putting it down. My point is, this is a great knife to have for many reasons. 1. its a knife, good for self defense 2. its wayyy fun, when your bored its there to just get out and mess around with 3. intimidation factor

Good to see youthful enthusiasm and energy! The best part of reading posts from young writers is that old fools like me are sometimes insecure about our internet and computer skills.

Kids today are so familiar with "new fangled" techonolgy! So it is refreshing to read a post from someone who has been born and raised around high tech, who has the courage to reject such impositions as spell check and grammar check! I salute you, son! When I was in college and had a lot more free time I played with a balisong, but ended up selling it to a friend later. Seeing this site posted with all kinds of cool tricks that I've never seen before makes me want to buy another one.

If nothing else it will scare the wife and she'll program the ambulance into the speed dial.

I carry a bali everyday as my EDC. I can do many of the flashy tricks and manipulations but if I wanted to open it under stress, I can do so extremely quickly by just holding the safe handle and flipping the bite one; this puts it into a perfect pikal grip. I've tried this opening on my back, upside down, etc. and I can do it without a problem. Intimidation factor is something that is just silly. It has no bearing on my choice of EDC.

Daniel. Can you work the bali with gloves on or when your hands are cold. like in winter. How about if your primary hand is injured.wet from falling in snow or bleeding I put mine away and went to a CS 5in Voyager I can thumb open ,wrist snap 1 movement and its open Their fun to play with but not for SD in colder months.

I don't wear gloves except when deer hunting or doing farmwork for the parents. I can do everything with my left hand that I can do with my right hand with my balis. I'll sit at my desk and do a pass or an aerial over to my left and practice with that then toss it back over to my right. Just for the heck of it, I just got my hands extremely wet and I could still manipulate my 40T with no problem. I even tried manipulating it with it wet and me on my back, no problems. Besides, my combat opening is extremely simple and when I bring it to bear, I have it in a point-up pikal grip.

As far as bleeding goes, it depends on the bleeding, if I have a sucking chest wound I might not be able to do a Y2K Rollover

I used to be way into balis and had a few $150+ knives, but sold all but one and spend all my money on guns now.
