Found this while searching through my files. Test was done a few months ago but never posted. Please visit the homepage of my website first, at

www.brassfetcher.com , and then click on .45ACP. It should be at the top of the .45ACP page. I am still looking at the number of visitors to my site, so if you can go from the start page to the results, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Thanks for the post. Good website. I was particularly interested in .17 HMR test. I'm waiting on a Savage 93RBVSS. A hot little round.

FYI, when the 'flying ashtray' was first introduced the jacket was scored in 12 places [IIRC] .It would open up on anything but penetration was shallow. If you hit a woodchuck in the shoulder spine area the bullet would not exit !! Not too long afterwards they eliminated the scoring and I assume more changes have been made since.

JE223,

That is a fine website, bro .................. thank you for your effort.

I studied .45 acp and .223, now I have to go back and look at .357 magnum.

I still have some of the old flying ashtrays left, not scored on the jacket. I like 'em a lot. They feed 100% in my Ruger, which feeds anything, and accuracy is outstanding. They are loaded to a rather short OAL and with that massive cavity up front, they didn't work in either of my 1911s. In fact, though, those guns didn't like hollow points of any description. But, they weren't too popular with 1911 shooters back then. I wonder if they function any better in picky guns in the Gold Dot version?

Flying Ashtrays

I likes these! :D

Here is what I find funny.

Way back , bone stock Gov't Models, fed these with NO problems.
So did every Bone Stock Colt I shot or carried back in the day.

I bought a Steel Combat Commander, in '73. I loaded up Flying Ashtrays and it run them right out of the box.

Great Loading that Flying Ashtray, now if we could get the 1911 making folks to "unfix" the new offering to shoot ammo again out of the box....

I remember a loading a friend worked up. 230gr flying ashtray with W231, I think the bullet was Speer. Not sure of the primer and it's been years since I've shot any of it.

Thank you for the kind words. It's my pleasure to publish this information.

mete, thanks for the information! Around when did the original 'ashtray' come out? I have noticed some very innovative rounds from the near to distant past, that for some reason failed to 'exist' into the current market - like the 'factory full house' loads - I shot some 20-30 year old .357mag Lawman a few years ago that just about broke my wrist in a security six. Hard to shoot, but it would likely do whatever that caliber was capable of doing.

What would you estimate the penetration (in muscle) of the original ashtray to be?

Glad ya'll are liking the website..

Maybe a 10mm test would be coming?

You have a very good site and I really enjoyed it.

I did not see a 10mm test. Do you think you might be doing one in the future.
Do you think it would be close to the 410 shotgun ???

:uhoh: Before anyone goes gaga on the question about the comparison, I do have a reason.:D

I will be loading it into my favorites. Thanks again.

HQ:)
