Do you think the US government is justified in its harsh stance against the ballistic knife? It is 100% illegal in the U.S.A. to own one and i wanted to know everyone elses thought process on this American position. I dont see any difference between it and a concealed carry. For those of you unfamilair with a ballistic knife, its a knife with a blade that can be shot long distances. It was originaly developed by the Russian specail forces.

I suppose they should be legal, as they aren't the most dangerous thing I ever saw in my life. You should have had a third choice "Yes they shuld be legal but I wouldn't bother with one."

I wish they were legal because I would love to have one in my collection. Though the chances of some kid finding one and seeing what the button did would be a little too high for them to not be atleast moderately restricted (OTF switchblades would hasve a similiar problem).

I would love to be able to legally own one as a curiosity. I don't think it's got any practical value, but it would be nice to have one none the less.

blackviper91,

First, welcome to THR.

Second, I'm not sure that restricting any knife has any real public health benefit. OTF knives are pretty expensive and aren't accessible to kids the way a toxic household cleaning product is or even a gun. Putting restrictions on them for public health reasons would require there to be some hazard to a meaningfully large enough part of the population to warrant putting a law on the books. Considering how small the chance for a child to accidentally injure themselves with an OTF, or a POS ballistic, I can't see it as being cost effective in putting the legislation in place.

Yea, I have to agree with you there. But do you really think that at this point where they are already illegal a politician is going to think reasonably like that? Too bad, would be nice if there were no restrictions on knife ownership, atleast as collectibles.

Cody,

I understand. I'd go one further, though. I'd legislate to control behavior that was a threat to the health and safety of others. Carry a katana down the street with a brace of pistols. Ok. Folks will look at you like you're headed to the latest Pirates of the Caribbean costume party, but if that's your thing, ok. Threaten, menace or even brandish and you've just behaved in a manner that should put you on a chain gang picking up butts on the side of the road. Actually use any of those to unjustifiably attack anyone and you should be put down like a rabid dog. Simple. It's how you use the thing and not what the thing is that counts.;)

I dont even see them as a practical threat. The spetsnaz created them as a concept weapon but never used them. They were working on some sort of gun powder charged ballistic knife to further the power but then this defeats any stealth aspect...I think we should be able to own them but perhaps maybe we should be required to have a concealed carry permit.

Nomad101bc,

I don't think anyone's ever actually come up with any evidence that the Spetsnatz actually had them. It was more probably a marketing ploy from the manufacturers in Florida (who originally sold them) to give them a cache' to get people to buy them.

I still don't see any point of having any laws controlling the possession or carry of such a silly thing when there are plenty of laws on the books for assault, brandishing and murder that would be applied to anyone's misbehavior with them. It's just another "thing", even if it's a silly thing.

I guess but i was trying to propose a compromise. Granted a bow and arrow is far more dangerous and thier are no regulations on those in most states. So why do we allow our government to stone wall these devices? The principle of it bothers me!

IN a nutshell...their is a REAL russian shooting knife its quality and the way its designed is way beyond the very poor american copy that was sold in the back of SOF in the earlty 1980s.The law was passed to keep the real version from being sold...they worked and very well. The american copy was junk and very dangerous to the user.

alwilliam,

Could you point us to any information on that. Everything I've seen only points at various versions of the trash knife while anything that would lead to a real Soviet ballistic knife ends in a dead end with no pictures and no credible evidence. I would really love to see anything that was solid.

yea..I will get a few pics up of all versions.

I have had a few of the versions from the american copy spring version to the real soviet spring version and have fired the silent cartridge versions.

These are NOT ballistic knives ....I will show one of those below.

The american copy is a low grade knife but the real russian designed spring powered knife is a excellent design !

ENJOY the pics of the REAL russian spring knife and PLEASE.... I would ask that they not BE RE-POSTED WITH OUT ASKING ME !! As I am one of a few in the U.S. who even has pics of these type item.THANK YOU !

Here is the low grade common american copy.Very poorly made of thin alloy with a crap blade, also has a very loud SPROINGGG noise when fired, dangerous safety and overall a bad weapon of no use..IMO.

Here is the real russian made and issued spring powered knife...these really work and were designed as a quiet kevlar defeating device. It very safe and The sping is QUIET , this design works great overall..all the positive things you hear as rumors about the american copy are are really about this knife.

This is REAL REASON why the law was passed as some wise & well informed person informed the right people that these were next to be imported into the US.

Here is a 1 of the 4 versions of the REAL russian "ballistic knife" it fires a single round(some carry 4 rounds) of a very-very quiet captive piston type round ,that is sometimes loaded with a special Dissolving poison bullet.Check out the tritium sights on this anti-sentry device!

Their is also a spike weapon kind of like the guardfather 4th generation that fires the spike out and uses industrial style .22 blanks and a captive piston concept .It will put the spike a little more than 1 inch into a concrete wall and makes very little if any noise.

Their is also a C02 powered knife that fires its blade and on and on............................

Boy you aint kidding!

And that grenade pin did nothing to make you feel better about it either!

I had one of the copies when they first came out. It took a good deal of effort to load, and once loaded, it was scary. If you didnt keep your thumb on the release, it would go off at the slightest jar, including just pulling the pin out.

They used to claim five time the force of a manual stab at about 30 feet. This was very optimistic. If you were lucky, it would stick in a sheet rock wall at ten feet.

Interesting toy, but thats about it.

As far as legislation goes, its all BS, as we all well know. Laws only scare or keep the law abiding in line.

I agree that a simple .22 lr or 9mm with a good can and slide lock beats all the assasin type gadgets...but IMO the russians really do have to best "james bond" type assasin weapons in the world.

No other country has spent the time and money the russian goverment has on the most arcane weapons known to man...well for example the 100% silent AP 3 shot cig case...a masterpiece of design and function...but of very, very limited use.

Pretty sure the Federal government did not ban ballistic knives in the US

LAR-15,

They're banned from importation and from interstate commerce, effectively banning them.

They were selling them for awhile without the spring, and I've seen them sold as a grappling launcher, as alwilliam shows. Have these also been stopped?

Doesnt seem like it would be any different than the auto knives sold without a spring, minus its spring, and like the autos, easily remedied.

I should of clarified I meant a total ban.

Some states do have total bans though of ballistic knives.

I believe the "ban" was passed sometime around 1985.
