.45-70 with a 500 grain lead bullet and 37.5 grains of Varget will give an estimated muzzle velocity of 1384 with a chamber pressure of 23364 psi. That is well within the SAAMI pressure limit of 28000 psi for this cartridge
You are looking at slightly better trajectory with a lighter bullet, though the cross section is wider. A bit more velocity from the 100 grain charge and the 300 grain bullet when compared to the vintage loads of 405 grains or 500 grain projectiles... on paper/in theory. There are so many different loads available, especially to the handloader. Very tough to tell unless you chronograph your load.
