I was recently given a 4" Colt Police Positive Special (.38 Special) by an elderly Uncle of mine. He doesn't recall much about the guns history other than he believes his wife bought it for him sometime back in the 70's. As far as I can tell it's never been fired and the bluing and the grips are absolutely perfect. (Serial # 256xx M)

I'm not planning on selling the pistol but was just curious as to what a ballpark value of this pistol might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be inclined to say $300 to $650, since all Colt revolvers are now collector's items. If it's in mint or near-mint condition, it's either worth $650 now, or will be in short order, especially if you've got the box and papers.

It would probably be worth more than $650 in the People's Republic of California, since it's impossible to "import" one from the United States.
