Police: Driver Hit Vegas Crowd on Purpose
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

Police investigate a burgundy Buick at the scene after ...
LAS VEGAS - A driver intentionally steered his car onto a sidewalk on the crowded Las Vegas Strip and then accelerated in a deadly scene resembling "humans being mowed down like a lawnmower," police said Thursday.

One person died and 13 were hospitalized, many with major injuries, after Wednesday's crash. A 27-year-old man faces charges of murder and attempted murder, Deputy Police Chief Greg McCurdy said.

"It appears he did this intentionally. The reason is questionable," McCurdy said Thursday.

The man, Stephen Michael Ressa of Rialto, Calif., had also been sought by his hometown police in a near-fatal assault Monday on his mother, who owned the car Ressa was driving in Las Vegas.

The victims, including 11 tourists, were walking in front of the Bally's and Paris hotel-casinos on Wednesday when the car struck them, then crashed into a wall and came to a stop in a landscaped area in front of Bally's.

The injured were strewn along the sidewalk and were being treated in the street by emergency personnel as stunned tourists looked on. Traffic on the Las Vegas Strip was stopped for almost five hours.

Ressa was unhurt and was arrested at the scene by an off-duty officer, police said.

Ressa was held Thursday without bail at the county jail and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

During interviews with detectives, Ressa appeared lucid and correctly answered questions about his ability to determine right and wrong, McCurdy said. But Ressa's statements were "bizarre in nature," McCurdy said.

Results of alcohol and drug tests were pending.

The pedestrian who died was a 52-year-old man. Seven of the injured remained in hospitals Thursday, five in critical condition, spokeswomen said.

Rialto police Det. Sgt. Reinhard Burkholder said Thursday that Ressa was wanted for questioning in the assault on his 54-year-old mother.

"He punched her numerous times in the face and choked her into unconsciousness and stood over her with a butcher knife," Burkholder said.

Ressa may have been under the influence of methamphetamine, Burkholder said.

He was not being pursued by officers when he crashed in Las Vegas, police said.
Tell UpChuckie Schumer, and Diane Feinslime, as well as Teddie "I am too drunk to see" Kennedy that we need to ban these deadly assault Buicks, and put mandatory steering wheel locks on all 18 wheelers, (even though there wasn't one involved), as well, as limit all gas tanks to 10 gallons or less, so this tragedy will never be repeated!

Well, if we would just register cars and require drivers to be licensed, these sort of things wouldn't happen....

Maybe we should also have a law against driving on the sidewalk.

There! That will fix things

If you think Buicks are bad, can you imagine if a Cadillac or Lexus were allowed to fall into the hands of such a person? The higher quality, better luxury, and more powerful engines could have resulted in FAR more deaths, likely many even to children and three-legged puppies!

We must ban these devices so that they do not fall into the hands of extremists and terrorists!

Do it for the children and three-legged puppies!

I think we should limit the amount of fuel these things can hold. ANything that holds more then 5 gallons of fuel should be illegal. Also, we should outlaw cruise control, it only turns these into automatic death machines, allowing the user to mow people down with greater ease.

We must ban all cars with seat belts as seatbelts are more inducive to vehicles used for ramming. vehicles with firewalls between the driver ans engine. and all cars with enclosed passenger comparments. as well as covered wheel wells, hood ordiments, streering wheels with greater than a 10 inch radius. Tires with aggressive tread patterns should be strickly regulated. There should be a tax for automatic transmissions mufflers and cars with only two seats. Convertibles must have their tops removed permantly. And all trunks must also be removed.

This is a perfectly resonable compromise because no one driving a car needs any of these things if they are useing it for ligitimate purposes.

We simply can't have these death machines out there flooding the streets. Ordinary citizens are not properly trained in their use and should not have access to them. They have no legitimate sporting purpose and there is no individual right to own them. Only the police and military should have them. We need reasonable restrictions and sensible legislation now to remove this deadly threat. What if a terrorist gets hold of one these?

They should ban Buicks, every time I see a Buick I don't even need to look to know it's being driven by a three-foot-tall blue haired legally blind widow of a civil war veteran. They're a damn menace in those things, it's like letting a mouse pilot an elephant from inside its stomach.

OMG What if sombody gets a hold of a Military Grade vehicle like a HumVee or a cheap copy like an H2 or H3 :what:

Ordinary citizens can't possibly be trusted with them!

What we really need is more regulation. I propose the following:

You go to the dealer, pick out your Buick, and pay for it. Get the VIN number.

Then you have to get your CLEO to sign off on a Form stating they see no reason why you shouldn't have a Buick. Include the VIN number on this form.

You send this form and $200 to the DOT, they spend 6 months doing nothing, then send you a tax stamp that you can take to the dealer to pick up your Buick.

It makes both sides "feel good". The pro-Buick side can have their Buicks as long as they pay for it, and the anti-Buick people feel good knowing there are not as many Buicks on the road. That's what we call a win-win right?

The National Buick Act of 2005. NBA.

I think I'll get a dealers license and some Buick samples instead, but I won't be able to sell them.......

Hahaha, you guys slay me.

They aren't going to ban Buicks until they get rid of those two-wheeled Saturdaynight Specials first.

Don't ban the buick...why limit it to one car model?

Lets start restricting gasoline! Lets set up a high tech lab and build a giant database where we can have a sample on file of every drop of gasoline used in the country! You would have to show your drivers license to buy gas, then be fingerprinted for every 5 gallon or more purchase.

Maybe even an insta-check system where they could run your prints through the DMV before you're allowed to purchase gas...

...I think we're on to something!

Maybe we're on to something here.

The old guy who killed 12 people at the Santa Monica farmers market was also driving a Buick.

Where are the studies to correlate pedestrian deaths with car makes/models?

Sounds like a terrible trend! Buicks serve no purpose that couldn't be filled with a Geo Metro, with suitable controls installed, of course!

Let's pass a law making every vehicle have a device to imprint its VIN on the tires.

That way we can ID the car from the skidmarks.
