Dear Sirs and Ma'ams,
I have a repro Philadelphia derringer

this one:

and i would like to put a front barrel band on.(*)
Can't find an aftermarket source other than a shot-in-the-dark "maybe this one will work"; so i am thinking of making my own.

has anyone made one or somethign similar before? how did you do it?

if this is better off in Gunsmithing, my apologies, and please move it of course.

very sincerely,
C-

(*) please dont ask why, mind is made up.

You might look to Dixie Gun Works for barrel bands and see if they have something close, but you'll have to cut the stock a bit and probably remove the front sight, so it will certainly be a completely custom job. Might well be better served by getting some brass stock and making your own.

Just a thought, if I were sold on a barrel band, I'd consider removing the wedge retainers (escusheons I think they're called) and place it there, making it into the wedge retainer. Then you could save the "schnable" curve to the front of the stock. Brass wouldn't be too hard to make the band out of.

Hmmm... I thought he said:

;)

I believe that any barrel band that would be at all appropriate to the time period of the Deringer would be a completely solid band, without a tensioning cut and screw. (Not like the M1 Carbine's, more like a Mauser's)

So the stock and barrel and sight will have to be configured in such a way that the band can slide on from the front and seat against a step or fillet of some kind. Probably then held by a retainer. I don't think the schnabel forend is going to survive this customization. Don't really see how the sight will either, considering the barrel is not tapered.
