It tends to follow me home, but it usually isn't the BP guns....
I learned to clean all guns ASAP after firing, no matter the propellant. (This includes smokeless also. ) Milsurp ammo requires it (due to corrosive priming) as well as BP, and it's a good idea with all types of ammo/powder regardless.
I like T/C #13 for cleaning BP guns, thought good 'ol Dawn in hot water is just fine most the time. I keep the T/C #13 in my possibles kit in case I fire a round hunting, I can clean it as soon I as I get the deer carcass cooling down.
Basically it is a wet patch fitted on a jag. When driven down a water filled barrel whose nipple or venthole is in a can of water, it forces the water out of the barrel and into the can. Withdrawal of the rod creates a vacuum, sucking the water from the can back into the barrel. It pumps water into and out of the barrel and is an old fashion method of cleaning the bore.
If you clean the weapon within a few hours of shooting it really doesn't matter what you are using for propellant. I would surmise from the responses that if you are a slacker that you should stick with smokeless......... Otherwise soap and water will clean either quickly, easily, and economically.
