Barrel Length

From reading some old threads, I noticed that people prefer to have a longer barrel for shooting trap and a shorter one for skeet. So I was wondering, what would be an ideal barrel length for a shotgun that would be be used for both trap and skeet, and may be sporting clays (I'm yet to try that one).

Longer barrels are back in vogue.

For trap, 34". For Skeet and Sporting, 30-32".

You can find a gun that will be very serviceable for both skeet and Sporting. My Beretta 682 Gold Sporting with 30" barrels fits the bill.

While you can use other guns, Trap is specialized enough that most people will have a specialized gun for it. I shoot trap with either a Browning BT-99 or a Beretta 686 topsingle, both with 34" barrels.

As said, longer barrels are "In" now. I like 30" 870 barrels myself, for most things airborne. The LC barrels are a bit more nimble than the standards.

Superreverb's 34" barreled 870 TC swings like a wrecking ball. Besides the inertia, the extra length lowers the noise and reduces muzzle jump. Faster recovery and all that.
