I took my Springfield 1911 apart and cleaned it up well. When trying to reinstall the slide stop I noticed it was not going in easy so I pulled it gently apart to look and the barrell link had flipped back over. I finally got it to where I installed and got it back together. I have ran the action and all functions well. Im just a little worried about shooting it unless there is no way it will go together except the barrell link be in the right place. Will the gun go back together with the link in wrong position? Or do you have to have the link in the right position before it will go back together. If this is so, then I breathe releaf. Thanks fellas

Breathe easy; a properly fitted 1911 will only go together (and cycle by hand) with the link in the right position.

Oops, I see Tuner answered you as I was typing.

Link...

I would say it is all good.

I feel your pain.

One thing I do is, before putting the slide stop on, in mid air, turn the gun on its right side and kind of rock the gun around. You will see the link flip back and forth through the aperature. You could then lay the gun down and put the link in.

Oh and be careful with the slide stop insertion. The plunger can be pretty tight on these guns. Use a credit card, playing card, guitar pick, whatever to help push the plunger in without scratching the frame.

Mine was so tight, I took mine to a smith the take care of that (while taking care of a action job).

John Browning designed it, and the Army used it for 70 years!

(Any two GI's could accidentally break a steel ball-bearing inside a rubber room.
And neither one would know how it happened!)

Of course it won't go back together wrong & the slide still function.
