There's a really nice piston REC 7 for sale locally for $1300. Only downside is it's in 6.8spc...

I had never handled a Barrett AR until today. I used to think they were a kind of "gimmick" item - just another manufacturer trying to horn in on the AR15 craze. My views are totally different now! What a quality piece of equipment. I didn't ever think the term "craftsmanship" could really apply to ARs until seeing what Barrett puts out. I don't have a ton of experience with premium ARs, I'm sure LWRC/POF/etc do good work as well.

Any word on if Barrett does caliber swaps in-house on these? Any ideas on what that would cost? Is this a deal worth jumping on? It's been sitting on the rack for a while, I'm assuming due to its caliber.

I kind of like 6.8, though brass is spendy. But I'm out on a $1300 (used) ar, regardless of who made it. I don't actually care much for ars much though, so I'm sure that colors my opinion.

Buy it. If you decide you hate it you'll have no problem getting rid of it. 6.8 is my favorite ar round. It performs very well out of barrels all the way down to 11.5 inches. Search around on 68 forum and see what they have to say.

If you're going to swap the cartridge, don't bother. If you would consider exploring 6.8, then that's probably a really decent deal, considering the manufacturer.
