Hey all,

I am on the market for a new rifle. I have a nice, minimalist AK with modern furniture, a few solid ARs (all DI), an SKS, and recently picked up a SCAR 17, as well as a Tavor on an impulse buy, and regret neither. I love the SCAR, and put a lot of money into it (extra parts kit, Stryker Enterprise fully loaded AR10 mag compatible lower, Vortex 1-6x, MREX rail, ACR stock...) and also enjoy the Tavor a lot.

I buy my weapons picturing them being used as much more than just range toys. SHTF-type thinking. I have used the SCAR mk17 and know its capabilities, which is why I place so much faith in my personal 17. However, I have been really stuck about what new rifle to get.

I am hoping to stay in 5.56 or .308, but this will probably be a 5.56. I have an absurd amount of that cal. I am also looking for a piston system.

I have seriously considered and still am researching the following:

1. Barrett REC7 Gen II 5.56
2. ACR 5.56
3. SCAR 16
4. Other piston ARs?? LWRC? S&W? Sig?

I don't have any experience with the SCAR 16. The 5.56 variants I have fired were all mk17s with 5.56 conversion installed (barrel, bolt, lower).

I know the ACR won't be compatible with any parts of weapons I currently own. That is my main concern with that platform.

Anyone with experience with any of those listed rifles, please, let me know what you think!

Anyone who owns

No right answer, just whatever you want. You already have DI 5.56 AR's, an AK and a Scar 17 so there is no "need" coming into play here or any capability gap.

I'm a training junkie so I'd just attend a carbine course for the coin of another redundant rifle in the price class you are looking at. You can only shoot one at a time, might as well be really good at the shooting part. If your thinking is truly SHTF oriented, training trumps hardware, you may end up out there in the "S" with just your wits trying to get home.

If choosing from your list I'd probably go scar 16. Makes sense, being that you like the scar 17. I don't have one, but I do find them intriguing.

Food for thought..... The scar price (mid $2k range, right?) range is pretty close to KAC SR 15 territory. Not a piston ar, but it's a pretty interesting rifle. And really, really nice.

Good luck to you, OP.

If it's a need your trying to fill ...

The Ares Defense MCR belt fed is what you "need" ... Like the SAW it will fire from mags and drums as well as belts. I found the MCR-lite on GunBroker for $2900(new) then ordered the 12.5" barrel, mag adapter to clip the SAW 200 round box or 100 round nut-sacks on.

It's very well made, fit & finish is beautiful and it uses the common M27 links which is the same as the FN SAW & HK 23 ... it will mount to M16 & AR lowers, the only modification needed was the bolt catch which comes with the upper.

Oh yeah, it's piston operated so it runs very cool & clean.

I buy my weapons picturing them being used as much more than just range toys. SHTF-type thinking.

That justification, flimsy as it is already, vanishes once you already have a couple of solid go-to weapons. Anything beyond that is a toy, so buy whatever appeals within your budget.

id avoid the barrett and the ACR, ACR is pretty much a dead weapon and there are better choices.. and piston AR-15s are just gimmicks with a lot of problems and zero benefits

you can consider a scar 16 to go with your 17, the CZ-805 bren is a nice weapon, its like a scar but reasonable priced and as high quality as everything else made by CZ, theres also the galil ace, sig 556, and steyr aug M1 just came out recently

From what you describe, you already have a few thoroughbreds in the stable. Some folks like to diversify, some like to stay the course. If it were me, I would be looking at a chassis bolt rifle in .308 built for taking on targets at 1/2 mile+ because you already have the close and midrange options very well covered.

Desert Tech MDR? (not released until ~April). It's a native 308 bullpup but will also be able to shoot 5.56 with the proper conversion kit. Desert Tech is also supposed come out with the following versions, all using the base rifle. 300 blackout, 7.62x39, 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.8 SPC.

I'm looking at it because I wanted a suppressed AR SBR but didn't want to deal with the increased noise and two tax stamps.

I actually have been toying around with the idea of picking up a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308. The only bolt gun I have used in the last 2 years is an XM2010 in .300WM.

I find the ACR to be quite handy, besides the stock is more substantial than the SCAR 16 and it uses an AR fire control group so you don't have to spend $350 on a Giselle just to upgrade it ... I think the Bushmaster name killed it's popularity but it's still a good piece of equipment.

Piston guns are over rated, cost too much $, and use proprietary parts. Used the SCAR at work in both calibers, not impressed. Get another AR or a 308 bolt gun.

Have used the mk17 as well. I am of the opinion that the Heavy is the best .308 battle rifle currently fielded. Where I am having problems is determining the best 5.56 for the money and purpose... Thoroughly looking into all of the suggestions here. Thanks everyone! any more help appreciated
