Just a little heads up for those of you looking to buy a new scope. (I am not affiliated with Barska) Barska is having a sale on some of their scopes and spotters at 50% off. I'm looking to get a good deal, and am constantly looking for such deals.:D

Their scopes are total crap, but I wonder if their spotting scopes might be ok...

I have a cheap Barska red dot and I have to say it works quite well for the money. It was about $20-30, IIRC.

I have a Barska Ridgeline 3x9x42 in Mossy Oak camo on my Savage 65m .22 mag. I paid $109 for it and so far (2 years down the road) it hasn't dissappointed me.

A trusted long distance shooter and gunsmith friend of mine has recommended their Swat Tactical series to me and many of his custom LR gun buyers. Mine is fine, but it is on a rifle I don't use often.

Yeah I have owned one, and I quickly replaced it. There are a LOT nicer scopes out there for not much more money, and when you use the higher quality ones its hard to go with a Barska level one again.

My advice would be save up and get something with really good glass.

You dont have to pay a ton, look for sales, clearences, etc.

For me, the Barska was a mistake I made very early on that ended up money down the drain.

There are also a lot of threads relating to Barska products.

If you do buy one, look thru it first. Do the scope tests you need to do with focusing eye relief etc, and really spend time with it first.

Do NOT just buy it off the internet sight unseen, my guess is you will be dissapointed. Low light especially.

Thanks for the further info on the scope. Might have to re-think how to go about buying my scope. Goin to Basspro tomorrow.

I think I found a Leapers scope that walks, talks, and reviews the part. Its a Leapers Accushot Swat Classic 3-12x44. sounds good.

I have one of their spotting scopes that I gave to my six-year-old to use as a toy because it's junk. Cloudy, dark, dang near had to press my eyeball against the thing to see through it. He seems to get a kick out of it, though.

On my Ridgeline, the image is clear, the reticle is a teensy bit fuzzy or it could be my eyes (everything is fuzzy up close). The eye relief is close so I wouldn't want it on a magnum. Light gathering capabilities are good but since we can't hunt at dusk here,it's a moot point. Other than eye relief, the only down side for me is the magification adjuster ring is hard to turn(not as hard as on my Leupold but hard). For the money mine was a good buy.

I have a Barska 6x20 on my .17 HMR. No problems to date. And a Barska 3-9 on my AR. Also no problems. However, they're both low recoil rifles.

I had a Barska Varmint 4-16x42. Worked great for me, but I only had it mounted on .22lr.

Shock resistance is something to consider.

I bought a cheap red-dot from walmart that worked great on my 10/22 but could be turned on and off using any kind of heavy load in a pump 12 gauge. Wasn't too long before it crapped out altogether.

I have a Barska 3-9 tactical (shorter tube) scope on an M&P 15-22 and it is not bright, somewhat cloudy at higher powers and the lighted reticle lights up the whole inside of the tube. It's a nice looking scope for an AR type rifle but performance isn't too good. I have had much better results with Centerpoint scopes in that price range.

However, if you're going to use it much look into the Nikon Buckmaster line for very good glass for a reasonable price. Moving up from there, the Nikon Monarch series and the Bushnell Elites are great.

The new Redfield scopes are a good value, too.

My recommendation for an AR is the Leupold Mark AR, which has a ballistic drop knob and glass that makes picking out bullet holes at 100 yards a snap. I have the 3-9x40 model with mildot, which is about $350. Without mildot is about $300. A good scope makes target shooting so much more enjoyable, so save up if you can.

Looking for something with a removable sunshade. (Dads advice) Any suggestions?

Not sure what your price range is, it would be good to know.

You can usually get sunshades for the Leupold and Nikon lines even if they don't come with them. Bushnell Elites come with them usually.

Take a look at the Mueller APT. It has a sunshade and is around $150 I think. It gets good reviews (haven't used one myself yet).

Akin to looking though the bottom of a thick, stained, iced tea glass. They are everything you don't want in a optic. Poor glass, poor coatings resulting in poor light transmission and clarity. Worst of all poor optics can really ruin an otherwise good hunt.
