Can RIFLED SLUGS be fired out of a smooth barrel shotgun? Sorry for the sorta dumb question, but you guys are the only ones to ask.(dumb question that is).I'm new to the shotgun world, but learning more day to day, just bought a new Mossberg Persuader 12ga. I hav'nt shot it yet, maybe later this week. Thanks.

Not a problem. Hope you don't do it with a pistol- grip only stock on the gun tho...

Lee, yes it is the cruiser model, but I did order a full stock set, made bye Houge.Should be here tomorrow sometime,I quailified with a Remington 870,but I like the Mossberg safety setup better. Thank you for the info.

Rifled slugs are a misnomer since the "rifling " does little if anything to spin the slug. The "rifling " is there so that the slug can pass through the choke without damaging it.Rifled slugs are designed for smooth bores and sabot slugs are designed for rifled barrels.

Yep. With the aforementioned Foster type slugs, the weight forward design keeps it flying true. The soft hollowbased lead at the rear expands somewhat so the slug doesn't rattle down the bore. Federal's new TruBall has a polymer ball that expands the base so it's tight against the bore to improve accuracy.

For stabilization, Brenneke type slugs (very hard lead--great penetration) also have either an attached felt wad at the rear (with a wood screw, no less) in their 1 1/8 oz short mag. load, or a plastic type wad system that clamps on to the rear of the slug--1 oz load.

The Sabot spins when a rifled barrel is used, and they're the most accurate. They may be suitable for very close range if you had to use them, but would deliver poor accuracy in a smooth bore. Similarly, buckshot gives poor performance in the rifled barrel.
