I am about to ask a question that it probably very stupid, but for my own piece of mind I must ask it.

My friend inherited a Mossberg Slugster and now wants to sell it to me. He doesnt have the model number but says its a 12ga pump. I have not seen the gun yet

My question is, can these shotguns shoot buck shot bird shot sporting loads etc or only 12ga slugs?

any info on this shotgun would be appreciated too.

Mossberg made two versions of the "Slugster", one with a rifled barrel and one with a smooth-bore. If it's a smooth-bore, your "golden" you can shoot whatever type of shot or slugs you want. If it's the rifled barrel, you CAN shoot shot out of it, but, the patterns will be horrible beyond 15 - 20 feet or so, also shooting shot enough times through a rifled barrel will foul the rifling and be a PITA to clean...

The easiest way to tell if it has a smooth or rifled barrel is to take the barrel off and look down it at some sort of light source, you'll see the rifling, you can also stick your finger in the end of the barrel and feel for the lands and grooves (make sure the gun is empty and on safe before you stick your finger down the barrel....)

Good luck and post pics if you get it!!!

Smitty covered it well. One other thing, Mossberg makes A LOT of different barrels...so if the "slugster" has a short barrel, you can buy a longer one, with vent-rib and swappable choke tubes, perhaps even ported if that spins your fan..

(The Slugster is most likely from the 500 series, so lotza stuff available)

Value will be around 250-300 or so retail.

My Spouse's Moss 500 bantam was that much roughly. The gauge is very important. On the barrel is the stamp near the back of the gun on top saying gauge, length of chamber etc.

The gun Im familiar with is the 20 gauge. 12 gauge is something else.
