I apologize for the simplicity of this question... I have always been a handgun guy and don't know much about long arms. It's time to round out my options. To begin, I've picked up a Yugo SKS and a K31 with my C&R License. I would like to put a simple, no-frills sling on both of them. I'm ordering a 3-point sling for my HD shotgun as I plan to take some training with it in the Spring.

What simple, common sense things do I need to look out for that I don't know yet about rifle slings? What width? Are some materials going to be more "slippery" than others? etc?

Thanks.

Here's how to use one for better shooting:

Pull out the arm loop! This is the most important point. Many beginners use the wrong loop to put their arm through. See the second photo down for the loop your arm will go through.

The original USGI green cotton web slings are hard to come by. Lots of people sell fake aftermarket stuff. Fake in the sense that they package them with government 'looking' labels that indicate some sort of government item number, when in fact they are not government/military issued.

Granted, I bought a couple of the desert tan slings from Cheaper Than Dirt that were probably made in Southeast Asia, and are not true cotton (nylon, cotton, polyester blend), they work ok. Haven't had any slippage issues in the metal keeper during a match on my Swedish Mauser.

I like the USGI type canvas sling for general purpose. I have a couple on my FALs and ARs, although my Garand has a really nice Turner 1903 style leather sling for target shooting.

CDNN has some good quality canvas slings. I've been buying those M1/M14 slings from them for years. I probably have a half dozen. I don't know if they are real, but they are well made and have parkerized steel hardware. I can't tell the difference between them and the one that came with my CMP Garand.

Sorry to revive this, but I finally got around to ordering some notice that the MidWay link ReadyOnTheRight provided above says that it will fit ARs, MIAs, etc.

How do I know what will fit my K31 and SKS? Is it as simple as measuring the width of the sling brackets on the rifle and making sure I get the same width sling? How about measuring for length? I would like to truly learn to shoot with a sling.

Thanks.

If that fails, there is the original leather sling. My SKS and K31 came with them.

Have you looked at Tapco? They sell SKS accessories.
