My brother in law (wife's brother) has just moved back to NY after living with my wife's uncle in Virginia for a year. Turns out that during that time, he bought a handgun from the uncle. Uncle was in a pinch, plus never really shot it and also gave him a good family deal. He had bought it new a few years prior.
Anyway, brother moves back to NY, can't take it with him because it's NY. He says "Hey, why don't you just take it, I'm not going to bother with getting a NY license anyway." He drops it off with a dealer in virginia, who is shipping to my dealer. I am paying shipping charges and the $25 transfer fee on my dealer's end, and getting this (edited brightness and contrast in the pic to reduce sun glare):

That is the actual gun, a Ruger P89D 9MM, it is in like-new condition. MSRP is $525

Too good to be true? I guess it stands mentioning that I have helped my BIL out financially in the past, but I have always made it clear that he was not obligated to pay it back. Perhaps that is a factor in all this, but it still feels like a sweet deal for me!

Edit: Leaving error as-is, but the correct model number is P89, not P89D, as corrected below

If that is the actual Ruger you are getting, it's not an 89D, that is the decocker only model, and the D does not have the holes in the decocker to see the white (safe) and red (fire) dots, as the P89 in the picture shows.

But if you are paying shipping and FFL only on the pistol, that is one AWESOME deal!!!!! :D :what: No matter what configuration it's in.

I have a P89D, I love the thing, and it fits me so well, I feel like it was built just for me. I have 2 15 round factory mags, and 2 30 round mags for it, and this past week, I ran about 300 rounds of WWB through it, on one day, I set up my 2 15's and both 30's in a line, and just fired the hell out of it. 90 rounds in about as many seconds, I'm guessing. Not one FTL, FTE, or FTAnything!!!!

Once you get used to the trigger, you'll LOVE it!!!!!! Congrats on a great deal!!!!!

Thanks for the correction regarding model numbers. I have had the opportunity to shoot this gun when visiting for Christmas and since I remembered that it had a decocker, I assumed it was the D model. This one DOES have the red-white dots.

So, what is the difference in function between the D and non-D?

Here is what I remember from shooting this gun: It is a double action, not DAO. Engaging the safety does a decock, so if you safe it, you will have a double-action trigger pull on the next round. How does the D model work?

The P89 was my first centerfire handgun, wayyyyyy back in '94 when I had just turned 21.

Much too big for my hands for just a 9mm, but I've got freakish little kid fingers for a 6'-0" grown man. Never gave me a lick of trouble otherwise.

Also, one of it's claims to fame is that it's got an indefinite service life with +p 9mm.

Best get that looked at. Left hand safety (or decocker) lever is missing. There should be a safety lever on both sides of the slide.

Call Ruger. They will take care of it.

MSRP is $525

Street price a hundred bucks less, more or less.

I think i remember it being intact, I don't think you can see it from the camera angle.

If it is missing upon reciept I will be sure to have it checked out tho, thanks for the tip.

Strong gun, you will never blow it up unless you try. Great deal I'll give you $50 bucks for it.:D Ruger autos get a bad press but they always work and if they ever break Ruger will fix it for free.

Solid gun, definitely a keeper!

The fellow I sold my P89 to accidently used 9x18 Makarov rounds for a while. :uhoh:

They worked 100% and the guns is still perfect!

My P89 is one of my favorite guns.I highly recommend the Hogue grips. No doubt, this will be the best deal you'll ever get on a gun. Definitely gotta' buy your brother in law dinner or a beer or something.

The difference between the 89 and 89D (also called P89DC, not sure what the difference is) is pretty simple, the D is Decock ONLY. You operate the lever, the hammer falls without engaging the firing pin, and the lever returns to it's original position, there is no manual safety. On the non-D models, engaging the lever DOES decock the pistol, but it remains in the down position, you are not able to manually cock the pistol or operate the trigger, you must manually push the lever back up to remove the safety, at that time you are able to manually cock the hammer, or pull the trigger to operate as DA for the first shot only, all subsequent shots will be single action until the decock/safety is operated again.

DAO is a whole 'nother bird, that model does not have the decock lever at all, and no spur to engage the hammer, as far as I recall.

I would suggest you go to Ruger's website and download the Instruction Manual for the P-series manual safety. You can also request a paper manual to be sent to you free by contacting Ruger.

Sweet

Sweet deal, dude!

I've never shot the P89, but the one guy I know who has one is very happy with it. He'd sell his Sigma, but never the Ruger.

Ditto. Takedown is pretty easy, but not obvious.
