Back in the late 60's my father purchased a colt 1908 hammerless for my grandfather. It was probably for home protection.

When My Grandfather died in 91 all his guns were scooped up by my messed up uncle. My uncle was a cruel sick SOB.

My dad not being materialistic just wrote off all the things his brother stole
which included all his childhood guns.

In 1994 my uncle went apes*** and tried to murder his wife and 13 year old daughter with a .22 rifle he fired off about about a dozen rounds into a closet they had locked themselves in. Ended up shooting his wife 7 times
thankfully the daughter came away unscathed and his wife suffered only minor injuries. Then my uncle turned the gun on himself.

After the funeral my dad got the Colt .380 back because my grandmother was able to save it from the feeding frenzy over my dead uncles huge gun collection.

Just yesterday I went to pick up my father for a day out and he presented the pistol to me. I was very surprised.

Its actually the only heirloom I will probably ever receive.

It was manufactured in 1915 and is in about 95% condition with very little wear.

I'm really proud of my dad and feel honored that he passed down to me the only item that was left to him by his father.

awesome! congrats!

i think you know the reason why your dad gave it to you...deep down.

I have the feeling that my dad's stepkids will plunder all his posessions that they haven't already stolen or destroyed.

I bought my dad a new taurus 9 shot revolver 2 years ago and it was stolen by his step son and sold for a bag of crack.

Congrats. I only wish the other stuff wouldn't have had to happen.

Congrats,

An heirloom of practical, and sentimental value. I'm sure you plan to take good care of it and pass it on to your children.

Congratulations,
There is not finer or more personal bequest than a weapon. You are blessed.
The family connection gives it an unestimable value along with any personal attachment you may have with your grandfather. Cherish it and make certain that you do your children the same honor.

Sam

Thanks,

I'm going to talk to my son tonight and tell him about the gun and make sure he understands what an heirloom is and the responsibility of accepting one.

He is a good kid and I hope he will appreciate it as much as I do.

Think about writing down the history of the gun and leaving a signed copy of it with the gun. Might make it more valuable in years to come and a source of pride to your son. Quantrill

Thats great
Take care of it and make sure it goes to the right people down the road
many times the wrong person gets it and sells it or does not take care of it

Great story, sorry about the bad stuff. I ended up with all of my Grandpa's guns, andthat's it for an inheritance from him. My sons learned to shoot with the .22 my Dad and I learned with, and some of the others have some great memories associated with them. Good on ya for wanting to 'pay it forward', to use an overused phrase.
